AT&T Says All-Fiber Network Unnecessary

Telecommunications company AT&T says it doesn't have plans to overhaul its current copper lines in order to build an expensive all-fiber-optic network to handle high-speed Internet traffic. Several companies, including Verizon and Comcast have spent billions of dollars to upgrade their services via fiber-optic lines.
AT&T is currently selling an Internet-based video service called U-Verse in competition with cable companies. According to a spokesman, AT&T was pleased with the bandwidth and speed of Internet applications that were being provided by its traditional copper lines.
Although there is enough bandwidth to meet current demands, some experts have argued that an increase in the number of households with high-speed Internet connections could put a strain on current capacity.
