Consensus reached on digital interface specification The consumer electronics and cable television industries have reached an agreement and completed the necessary extensions to the baseline IEEE-1394 specification (firewire) which will promote compatibility between digital television receivers and digital set-top boxes. The work on IEEE-1394 specification was completed by Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association R4.8 subcommittee Working Group 1 and CableLabs' OpenCable. The specification is now reflected in CEMA document EIA-775 and OpenCable document OCI-C1, both of which will now undergo the formal acceptance process.
C-Audio becomes THX approved BSS Audio's C-Audio GB 402tx and GB602tx amplifiers now have THX approval. On the tx versions of the amplifiers the controls will not be user-accessible. Once the levels have been set by the installer, they will be locked behind a tamper-proof cover. They will also be differentiated from the non-tx versions by a differently decalled fascia plate.
Matsushita/Panasonic awarded Emmys Matsushita Electric Industrial (MEI), Osaka, Japan, announced that it has received two Technical/Engineering Achievement Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at ceremonies in New York City. The first Emmy was presented for breakthrough work in the development of the DVCPRO small-format digital component videotape format. The second was for the development of a High Definition (HD) Intra-field Compression Processor that integrates with Panasonic D-5 HD VTRs.

Sony joins COLOR The COrporation for Laser Optics Research (COLOR) announced that Sony Electronics has invested in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based company, assuming a minority equity interest. COLOR also announced that the company has strengthened its Board of Directors with the addition of Akihiko Nakamura, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Sony Electronics.

ACT expands videoconferencing ACT Teleconferencing, Denver, announced an agreement with GTE Network Services to be its preferred provider of videoconferencing services to customers around the world. ACT Videoconferencing will take over GTE's existing videoconferencing bridges and deploy them in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and Australia.
