Christie QuadHD84

In this month’s showcase we look at commercial-grade flatpanel displays, sizes 70in. to 84in. We picked this size range to reduce the field to a select number of flatpanels and those capable of handling the more demanding operational environments, which would include placements in such areas as corporate, educational, healthcare, and hospitality/museum/entertainment. As LED flatpanel technology becomes more prominent (versus LCD) and as prices continue to decline, we expect the field of 70in. and larger flatpanel displays to be the preferred choice for good viewing where 65in. monitors and smaller do not suffice. As flatpanel displays continue to increase in size, they become viable options in many facilities where video projectors would have typically been deployed.

Christie’s QuadHD84 is designed to meet graphically demanding data visualization applications. The LED-backlit, 84in. display touts 3840×2160 pixels and true 60Hz refresh-rate capability. The panel accepts content on its seven HDMI inputs in two ways: The first is by mapping four frame-locked HDMI signals to the four quadrants of the screen, creating a synchronized composite image. The other three HDMI 1.4a inputs are independent and able to scale several HD resolutions at both 30Hz and 60Hz rates for a full screen experience. The QuadHD84 maintains 15-pin RGB, component, and composite inputs for legacy signals; has two USB ports; an Ethernet port; and houses two RS-232 inputs for control.

JVC PS-840UD

JVC’s PS-84OUD is an 84in. panel that competes on the ultra HD field. The edge-lit LED display has a pixel density of 3840×2160, a 178-degree viewing angle, and 1400:1 screen resolution. It has four dedicated HDMI inputs for use when displaying an ultra HD signal at 60Hz. Three others are allocated for other scaled HD signals. It offers composite and component inputs, a VGA in, 3.5mm audio in and out, optical audio out, and two USB ports for media playback. Control is managed over RS-232 or Ethernet. The unit is 2.6in. thin and has two built-in 15W down-firing speakers. It can be accept an expansion module via its OPS slot.

LG 84WS70MS-B

LG’s 84WS70MS-B delivers a versatile display option for a multitude of professional applications. Measuring 84in., it supports a 3840×2160 resolution at 30Hz from any of its four HD inputs (two HDMI, one DVI-D, and one DisplayPort), and can be used in both portrait and landscape orientations. TCO and eco-conscious, the LG unit boasts EnergyStar 5.1 credentials, meaning it has about 40-percent less energy consumption compared to noncompliant models. It is paired with temperature and brightness sensors to dynamically optimize image quality under changing conditions. The LG is a behemoth in screen size only, as it is wrapped in a 27.9mm bezel. Due to its slender 4in. depth, it can cleverly house compatible LG media players on its back for use in digital signage applications. The unit also includes 15-pin RGB, RS-232, RCA composite audio inputs and outputs, two USB ports, and a LAN port.

Mitsubishi MDT701S

The MDT701S, from Mitsubishi, is a 70in. full HD (1920×1080) display that offers advanced controllability and image processing tech. The 701 has a 5000:1 contrast ratio and 176-degree viewing angle. It accepts HDMI via two ports, a DisplayPort, has DVI in and outputs for daisy-chaining, and has an SDI option for extended signal transmissions. On the analog side, there are BNC connectors for composite signals in and out, and a 15-pin VGA for computer connections. Audio is passed in and out through mini-stereo jacks. The panel has RS-232 for control, and is compatible with Crestron RoomView and AMX Device Discovery for LAN control. The capability of the display can be expanded when it is paired with a compatible OPS card.

NEC V801-AVT

NEC operates in the large display arena with its edge-lit V801-AVT 80in. LED display. It supports full HD (1920×1080) via HDMI, DisplayPort, or DVI-D; has the standard plethora of legacy inputs via BNC connections; a 15-pin RGB in; and stereo mini-jack inputs. For control, a LAN and RS-232 ports round out the suite of connection points on the NEC. An added feature that demonstrates the display’s utility is its housing of an ATSC tuner for receipt of HD broadcasts. Two 10W speakers are integrated, and at just 3.4in. thin, the unit can easily hide external accessory speakers for those applications when a little extra volume is called for. A key differentiator is NEC’s inclusion of an Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) expansion slot. Digital signage installs can be made easier by passing AV, control, and power directly to OPS-compliant devices right from inside the display. NEC throws in a presenter license of DisplayNote NEC Edition in a play to bolster classroom collaboration.
