There have been substantial advances in camera imaging and having this technology coupled to networked and wireless control provides not only an incredibly useful tool for video production, security, and videoconferencing, it also gives us a line of AV gadgets that are incredibly fun to operate. The extensive range of preset shots is a wonderful feature for owners while the low-light performance and PoE capability have widened and simplified options for installers.

ACTi Corp. KCM-8211

Taking controlled video outdoors under a wide range of light and temperature environments is the 8-megapixel KCM-8211. The ACTi Corp. included an 18X zoom lens, DC iris, and auto-focus on this unit along with a 16X digital zoom. The camera can pan through 350 degrees, and it zooms from 1X to 18X in 2 seconds. Its progressive scan CMOS image sensor can output color video in lighting down to 0.1 lux and monochrome to 0.05 lux. Compression formats include H.264, MPEG-4, and MJPEG with a maximum of 30fps in resolution up to 1280×720. White balance can be set to automatic, hold, and manual while the camera can show simultaneous dual streams based on two configurations. The camera can be positioned on up to 64 presets. The assembly is IP66 weatherproof rated.

Bosch Autodome 7000

The BoschAutodome 7000 HD high-speed dome camera greets users and system integrators with a wide range of installation options. Powered on high PoE (indoor only) with a single cable for power and control or run on a separate 24VAC supply, the IP66-rated system can be housed in an in-ceiling mount or on an indoor/outdoor pendant fixture with a clear acrylic bubble. Dual recording options include iSCSI and SD card. The 2-megapixel 1080p 25/30 video system has a 20X optical zoom, but it can be configured to operate in 720p 50/60. The camera allows complete PTZ control including presets, tours, and alarms over the network. There is also web-based configuration of all dome settings. Tours can be set up to use all 256 preset positions and the dwell time on each one is configurable. For best performance in different environments, the system can be operated in any of five separate modes: outdoor, indoor, low-light, motion, and vibrant.

To suit a variety of indoor and outdoor applications, Canon has equipped the XU-81 single-CMOS camera system with a 20X HD zoom lens, 12X digital zoom, long-distance HD-SDI output, waterproof and dustproof IP55-rated enclosure, and switchable 1080i and 720p video along with RS-232 and RS-422 serial control for a wide range of installation options. For SD video monitoring it adds a composite video output on a BNC connector. In normal mode the camera has a noise rating of NC<30 to suit very quiet indoor environments and it can use its slow shutter mode to shoot in very low light levels. The XU-81 can be mounted upright or upside down and the image can be set to automatically flip when the tilt angle reaches 90 degrees. It has a waterproof microphone, 126 presets, and auto/manual white balance, gain, and focus. The system is powered on 12VDC and uses 20W power.

Elmo PTC-400C

The PTC-400C from Elmo has a 470 horizontal TV line imaging system that can switch to monochrome for clear detail under very low light (1 lux) conditions and it can be operated along with eight other cameras with the included remote IR controller through an RS-485 daisy chain connection. It can zero in with a combination of its 12X optical and 16X digital zoom while running on 12VDC power at eight separate speed settings. The system has a 350-degree pan range with a speed up to 100 degrees per second and a tilt range of 200 degrees at that maximum speed. The camera can be positioned on 16 presets with area masking and image flip for tracking targets passing directly beneath its location. Additional features include automatic and manual white balance, auto iris, and picture adjustments in hue, AGC, detail compensation, and high-speed shutter.

IC Realtime PTZ-SEN-3600

For best images at night, the PTZ-SEN-3600 has infrared LEDs that integrate with the zoom and they change proportionally from 60 degrees at their widest view to 6 degrees with maximum telephoto on the 36X optical zoom. The unit also features an adjustable de-fog function for foggy conditions. IC Realtime has designed it to pan endlessly through 360 degrees and tilt from -25 to 205 degrees with 128 presets, tour function, eight programmable privacy zones and a digital image stabilizer. Using the integrated heater/blower, the system can operate over a wide temperature range in its IP68-rated housing. Motion detection is switchable, and there are alarm input and output terminals. The body has a small cover plate that when removed reveals a group of dual in-line switches used to set the camera address, baud rate, and communication protocol.
