Emerging Technologies: Digital Signage

Some of the latest products in DS

Digital signage has become so much more than screens mounted on the wall (although they’re still that too). Displays are being combined with innovative and immersive technologies to create an even richer experience. Below are just some of the unique products that are emerging to redefine the digital signage landscape.

CONDUCTIVE FILM

When deploying interactive digital signage, touch hardware technology is as important as the software because users have come to expect immediacy. While incumbent touch technology for interactive digital signage today is infrared (IR), the market is shifting to projected capacitive (pro-cap) for better performance, sleeker modern product design, and ease of maintenance. Pro-cap touch systems also enable faster touch response times, more accurate multi-touch, multi-gesture, and multi-user interactions. Cima NanoTech is accelerating the shift from IR to pro-cap in large format touchscreens by providing its proprietary SANTE transparent conductive films in various cost-effective and easy-to-integrate formats, including SANTE Touch Modules, which is comprised of a touch sensor and touch controller that is optimized for up to a 6-millisecond response time and multi-touch performance. SANTE Touch Module is scalable to larger screen sizes, starting at 40in. up to 104in. for applications like interactive digital signage, interactive whiteboards, interactive tabletops, vending machines, video walls, and kiosks.

VIRTUAL REALITY TREADMILL

Virtual reality (VR) is predicted to become a $150 billion industry by 2020. Internet giants Facebook and Google are already acquiring sophisticated VR technologies. 3D graphics will no longer be the standard for delivering an immersive visual experience. Companies like Oculus VR, Virtuix, and Leap Motion are prepared to deliver VR environments and sensory experiences that will feel so real they could suspend awareness of actual reality, such as the Virtuix Omni treadmill. It’s a full-immersion VR system that works with the Oculus Rift headset to place clientele in building environments. Houston Dynamc Displays (HD2) will be using the technology to help architectural developers put their clientele in their designs, where they can virtually open doors, go up elevators, look through windows, etc. Using the treadmill gives the sensation of actually walking through the buildings seen via the headset.

DOOR DISPLAY

The iDOOR from Anthony is the next-generation of consumer video engagement and messaging technology for commercial refrigerators found within various retail segments that sell refrigerated and frozen food products. The patented iDOOR is an intelligent, transparent LCD display panel embedded in the glass doors of retail cold cases, standalone coolers, and walk-in refrigerators. Connected wirelessly and managed remotely, the iDOOR plays full motion video or still images directly within arm’s reach of the product being promoted. The durable hardware is built to withstand the temperature variations encountered in retail refrigeration environments and continuous door use. The iDOOR provides 1920×1080 pixel resolution and PVD anti-glare glass coating. iDOOR software offers retailers with a scalable and robust solution that can extend to other digital solution needs. Power supply is 24V (100W max.) remote connected via electrical hinge pin. Available door screen sizes are 32in., 50in. and 65in.

HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAY CASE

Realfiction’s holographic display case, the Dreamoc, sets a new standard in digital signage by transforming an advertisement into an engaging interactive experience for consumers that catches and holds their attention. Realfiction’s Dreamoc uses an interactive holographic display to captivate consumers by presenting a floating 3D image projected within clear Lucite mounted on a pedestal. It engages audiences well beyond a poster or even a TV commercial, inviting customers to interact with the product on a whole new level.
