The design of Hall County Schools’ Academies of Discovery emphasizes cutting-edge technology—wireless mobile technology, cloud computing, and a range of other tools—that foster interaction, collaboration, and communication. When the Academies chose to adopt an open BYOD policy, with students bringing in 75 percent of the mobile computing devices in use at the school, it posed a challenge: How could students be enabled and encouraged to collaborate with each other, rather than working in silos on their own small screens? To address this, Hall County Schools turned to Gainesville, Ga.-based dB Audio & Video to integrate digital signage and AV to create collaboration spaces where students could gather in small or large groups and work together around a single, large screen.

Working with Samsung and the Academies of Discovery to identify the right mix of display technology that would both enhance their educational mission as well as fit their physical space and budget, dB Audio & Video chose Samsung’s LED large-format displays to kit out more than 40 classrooms as well as the school’s Learning Commons and hallways.

“The project was a win for both the school’s education objectives and its bottom line,” says Neil Philpott, dB Audio & Video’s systems advisor. “By using LED display technology, the school was able to reduce its energy consumption while also lowering its total cost of ownership. The selection was based on the picture and audio quality, the range of solutions available, as well as the reduced energy consumption and consequent cost savings achieved through Samsung’s LED-lit displays.”

dB Audio and Video installed Samsung’s 65in. ME series display with CY-TM65 Optical Touch Overlay in more than 40 classrooms, turning each screen into an interactive whiteboard with dual drawing performance. Samsung’s 55in. MD series displays were integrated in the school’s Learning Commons, allowing up to 16 students to connect their individual mobile computing devices to share their work, while a videowall comprising nine Samsun UD series LED-lit LCD displays serves as both a virtually seamless viewing expanse and a backdrop for student presentations and performances. Samsung LED-lit LCD displays are installed throughout the school’s hallways.

To power the integrated media player with the installed displays, Philpott’s team used Samsung’s MagicInfo Lite software that allows the school staff to easily schedule video clips or run slide shows by simply plugging in a USB stick, while Safari Systems is used as the primary content delivery system.

“Prior to the project, the school used a smart board technology, which was locking up and halting teaching time,” says Philpott. “The smart board would not run smoothly and teachers would spend class time trying to fix the technology. With the installation in place, the school is now better able to focus on teaching and run smoother classroom sessions. Kids are able to attend class without distraction and with much more enthusiasm.”
