2007 CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Awards Entry:
Best Integrated Home

The goal of this project was to deliver a medium level of automation with a focus on lighting design in a North Georgia mountain home. The design included a 16-zone distributed audio system with a few primary viewing areas for nicer TVs. The architectural aspects of the ceilings required attention to detail from a lighting standpoint. Some of the TVs in the home were recessed into the wall and in order to create an impressive aesthetic appeal, extra design and project management time was required.

One of the major challenges of this project was working with multiple subcontractors to successfully complete some of the more difficult installations. For example, the Xenon lighting in the terrace-level great room required a great deal of coordination between the trim carpenters and the electrician to ensure we had everything engineered correctly. Every coffer in the coffered ceiling contained roughly 20ft. of Xenon and there were nine coffers. Each coffer had to be supplied with a transformer, but the transformer had to be placed within 30ft. of the area to compensate for voltage drop. The control system includes a Control4 media controller with two Control4 amplifiers and a Control4 audio switcher. They opted for satellite and a DVD player in the rack, which were audio- and video-switched to two of the TVs in the house. A Vantage lighting control system was installed to coincide with the lighting design to accent the marvelous architecture.

The client for this home commissioned us to do the low-voltage and lighting design. We were referred from the client’s interior designer, due to her experience with us in the past. The plan for the home was created by meeting on a regular basis to discuss design ideas and show examples of past work to reference aesthetics. These meetings were the key to success because we were able to work through most of the potential problems before they could occur. The final design for the home included security, lighting, lighting control, audio/video distribution, HVAC control, satellite distribution, and some electrical design. The ideas from the design meetings were placed in architectural prints and used for installation during pre-wire and trim-out.

The following are the five most-used functions of the system: Distributed Audio System – Gives the client the ability to listen to local FM or AM radio, CD music from their media server, and satellite radio. Media Room - Enables the family to watch a movie at any time and enjoy time together through extremely clear picture quality and crystal-clear sound. Lighting Control System – The clients can turn all the lights on and off from one button, or set mood scenes in any room of the house. Distributed Video System – Using the Channel Vision switcher, the client can view all of their HD video sources to any of the 11 plasma TVs. Touchscreen Control – Utilizing a 10.5in. touchscreen, the client can control the distributed audio system, lighting control system, and distributed video system throughout the house.
