Taking high fidelity sound into the wet, windy, freezing, and steaming outdoors has always carried challenges, but the newer range of all-weather speakers combines toughness with precision assembly to produce a new level of sound quality in the harshest environments. The selection of models and their stable of capabilities and customization has ushered in a new opportunity for creative installation professionals to make a bold statement when it comes to matching sound for the exterior venue. The products assembled here are typical of these trends.
The AH99-8ST stadium horn from Atlas Sound produces a directional dispersion pattern for large venues, and it is weatherized with a perforated aluminum screen covering the horn mouth, a secondary screen forward of the HF driver, and a third tightly perforated screen protecting the 8in. woofer. The horn bell also has a weep hole to allow for drainage of any moisture buildup. The assembly offers 100W power handling capacity and a 90x90-degree coverage pattern. There is also a built-in 60W, 70.7V transformer with power taps at 7.5W, 15W, 30W, and 60W, and it features a recessed, weather-resistant 7-pole terminal block on the bottom of the unit.
Providing consistent coverage for venues with complex seating area geometry, the Bose LT Series uses the Bose V2 midrange manifold to sum the output of two 4.5in. extended-range cone drivers for lower distortion and better transient response. The models in the line provide coverage from 30x20 degrees to 90x70 degrees, and frequency response from 150Hz-18kHz to 170Hz-18kHz. The enclosures are composed of exterior-grade Baltic birch plywood, and the outdoor-rated models are environmentally classified as IEC 529 IPX5. For mounting, each housing has 16 points with SAE 3/8in. 16 threaded steel inserts, four each on top, bottom, and sides. Wiring is attached on two parallel wired NL4 Neutrik SpeakOn connectors.
The new WET X series speakers from Community Professional represent its next generation in the weather-resistant WET Series. Available in 12in. and 15in. two-way, full-range models, they incorporate a 1.4in. exit HF compression driver. The 12-model WX line is rounded out by the WX 218SDF, a down-firing, dual 18-inch subwoofer. The inside surfaces are lined with seven-layer marine-grade, resin-sealed plywood. The outside is composed of multi-layer fiberglass with a smooth glossy finish, available in black or white. Mounting brackets are included with each enclosure, and the 12in. and 15in. models can be ordered with a built-in 400W autoformer for 70V/100V applications.
Crestron has introduced outdoor speakers. Its AIR SR8 two-way, surface-mount model comes in pairs, each featuring an 8in. woofer and 1in. titanium dome tweeter. The system provides a frequency response of 50Hz to 20kHz (-10dB) and 200W power handling capacity. The weatherized cabinet can be mounted to any solid flat surface and oriented to aim over a wide range using the unique QuickBall mounting system. The system can be attached to a 1-gang electrical box to allow wiring to be run through a wall directly to the speaker. Each cabinet is constructed of ABS plastic with a powder coated aluminum grille.
For the installation in exterior venues, the WR-6515 from D.A.S. Audio incorporates a 3in. voice coil 15P woofer. The HF section is composed of an M-75 compression driver with 1.5in. annular diaphragm attached to a 60x40-degree rotatable horn. Depending on the application, there are two exposure ratings available. The CX model is for covered areas and has a thick Iso-Flex coating on both the exterior and interior surfaces. The DX variant has a fiberglass exterior and a gel-coat sealed interior for environments where it is directly exposed to the weather. Both have stainless steel fittings and mounting hardware.
