Canon USA will file site plans with the Town of Huntington, N.Y., for a new corporate headquarters facility for Canon Americas. Overseeing 10,000 employees in 23 affiliate companies across North, Central, and South America, Canon Americas’ new headquarters will be built on a 52-acre site in Melville, N.Y., and will strive to achieve at least a Silver LEED status. The company currently leases office space in Lake Success, N.Y.

“This is an exciting milestone in our efforts to build a state-of-the-art headquarters facility that will serve as a model of an environmentally responsible development project, and will enable us to expand our operations. We are looking forward to being an active member of the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County communities,” said Joe Adachi, president and CEO of Canon USA. “We greatly appreciate the efforts made by the state, county, and town officials to help us remain on Long Island.”

Canon employs more than 1,000 people on Long Island. The new site plan calls for a 690,000-square-foot, five-story building in a park-like setting with reflecting pools and other sustainable innovations, such as natural lighting and energy-efficient materials, says the company. Eventually, Canon plans to increase its workforce to 2,500 employees at the new location.

The anticipated completion of the Huntington headquarters is late 2010, pending an approval process. The site plan needs to be approved by the Huntington Town Planning Board, Suffolk County, and the New York State Department of Transportation before construction can begin.
