FCC to Field Test White Spaces Devices

The FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) announced that it would begin field testing the performance prototype television white space devices (WSDs) this week.
It plans to test the WSDs as part of its rule-making to consider authorizing the operation of new low-power devices in the TV broadcast spectrum at locations where individual channels/frequencies aren’t in use for authorized services. Having already conducted laboratory tests, the field tests will largely take place in the greater Washington, D.C., area and be open to the public.
Field tests will be conducted in and around Washington, with suburban and rural sites chosen in neighboring Maryland, including the Thomas A. Dixon, Jr. Aircraft Observation Area at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Glen Burnie, Md. Urban setting tests will take place at the FCC offices in the capital.
The FCC said wireless microphone testing would be conducted within four weeks at yet-unnamed sports and entertainment venues.
