Pioneer Corp. announced that a jury in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas ruled in favor of the corporation in a patent infringement suit against Samsung SDI and two affiliated companies.
The jury awarded damages of $59.3 million to Pioneer, who had claimed in 2006 that plasma televisions manufactured by Samsung infringed two patents held by Pioneer regarding plasma display technology.
Pioneer released its first 50-inch high-definition plasma television for consumer use in 1997, and its first 50-inch full HD plasma display for consumers in 2006. Pioneer officials said the company intends to continue its basic stance of protecting its intellectual property rights.
