Sony plans to roll out the new VPL-E series, the latest generation in its family of entry-level LCD front projectors. The four new models – the VPL-EX50 with 2500 lumens and the VPL-EW5 widescreen, VPL-EX5, and VPL-ES5 models with 2500 lumens – were designed specifically for use in classrooms and conference rooms.

The VPL-EX50 and VPL-EX5 models offer native XGA 1024×768 resolutions, while the VPL-ES5 unit features SVGA 800×600 resolution. The VPL-EW5 widescreen projection model has a WXGA 1280×800 resolution. The projectors’ shapes broaden toward the front, and each automatically projects images upward on the screen, for less tilt adjustment. They also use a combination of 3LCD technology for brightness and Sony’s own BrightEra technology that makes the projector panels resistant to UV damage and increases light resistance. A short focal length lens allows large-screen projection from a short distance.

The $1,270 VPL-EX50, $1,050 VPL-EX5, and $910 VPL-ES5 will be available in April. The $1,410 VPL-EW5 is schedule to be available in May.
