AVI-SPL announced the appointment of Michael Brandofino as executive vice president of video communications and unified collaboration. Previously, Brandofino served as CEO for Glowpoint, and was awarded the Telespan PACE award in 2008 for his contributions to the advancement of video communications.

“The video communications industry has always lacked a strong independent global player,” said Brandofino in a statement. “AVI-SPL has done a great job of pulling many of the pieces together to fill that gap.”

“Over the past several months, AVI-SPL has worked very hard to solidify its product and services offering in the video teleconference (VTC) space,” said John Zettel, CEO of AVI-SPL, in a statement. “This includes the launch of ConferencePoint, AVI-SPL’s own managed conferencing service support for both traditional video and telepresence environments. Mike will play an integral role at AVI-SPL, highlighting our commitment to be a market leader in VTC technology.”

Prior to becoming CEO of Glowpoint in 2006, Brandofino was the chief technology officer, having joined the company when his consulting business, the Johns Brook Co., was acquired in 2000. As CTO, he was responsible for building the team and developing the Glowpoint network and services. According to the company, his team forged nine patents and numerous industry firsts.

Brandofino brings more than 17 years of experience in the video communications space, beginning when he co-founded Face to Face Communications, a video equipment reseller, in 1992. The company was eventually acquired by the Johns Brook Co. in 1997.
