At InfoComm 09 in Orlando, Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. will demonstrate its new 3D-capable laser projection system. Company officials say the ESLP 8K is the world’s highest resolution production video projector, capable of producing 3D images at 4K x 4K resolution.

E&S officials expect the product to offer a 3D experience to museums, universities, research labs, control rooms, creative studios, and indoor venues. Because of its zero-persistence characteristics, the projector can switch between left-eye and right-eye views at 120 Hz or more, without any “bleed” between the views. The result, says the company, is a noticeably cleaner separation and 3D effect compared to active stereo glasses and an LCoS or LCD projector.

The ESLP 8K is powered by a set of laser light sources that reportedly offer multiple benefits, including lower cost of operation. The lasers yield a much wider useable color spectrum than is available in conventional LCoS, DLP, LCD, or other lamp-illuminated projectors, according to E&S. Its solid-state laser light sources require modest, quiet cooling and allow the projector to be powered from an ordinary wall outlet. The laser light sources themselves do not require the periodic replacement and disposal characteristic of conventional lamp-driven projectors.

For customers who need to switch between 2D and 3D images, the ESLP 8K comes with control software that allows users to easily change the display format from 3D to 8K x 4K.

The ESLP 8K will be available in the second half of 2009.
