Extron Electronics is shipping its new SoundField SF 228T, a two-way ceiling tile speaker for 70V/100V systems. The Extron design features a low profile, 2-by-2-foot by 5.3 inches deep enclosure that is UL 2043 plenum rated, weighs less than 20 pounds, and drops directly into standard suspended ceilings, providing quicker installations, according to the company.

The two-way ported design includes an 8-inch woofer and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and a frequency response of 50Hz to 20kHz for high fidelity music and speech reproduction. The SF 228T offers 60W continuous pink noise and 120W continuous program output. This speaker is sold in pairs and is designed for fast and easy installation into sound systems requiring high quality, wide bandwidth audio playback, company officials said.

“The SF 228T delivers extended frequency response with high-quality audio performance in a design optimized for easy installation into suspended ceilings,” said Casey Hall, vice president of sales and marketing for Extron, in a statement. “There’s no cutting involved when you replace a ceiling tile with this plenum-rated speaker. End users get better-sounding audio and integrators get quicker installations.”

The SF 228T provides extended low frequency response with deep, authoritative bass output, Extron said. The low-frequency extension is achieved through a long-throw woofer mated to a tuned-port enclosure, plus a large transformer for distortion-free low frequency output. An MDF front baffle for the woofer provides the rigidity and stiffness to minimize enclosure vibrations that would otherwise compromise sound quality. The mass of the MDF baffle is offset by an aluminized composite housing to create a lightweight hybrid enclosure that balances improved acoustic performance with installation safety, allowing the speaker to meet ceiling-mounting codes without additional permits when installed in classrooms.

For easy installation, the SF 228T drops into the same space as a standard 2×2 tile and includes a T-bar for 2×4 ceilings. It also provides theft deterrence with a neutral white, perforated steel grille that matches the appearance of standard air conditioning vents and grid ceilings.
