Gefen rolled out its new GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder with Dolby, allowing any movie or TV show broadcast in 5.1 Dolby digital audio to be decoded then output in analog two-channel left-right format, according to the company.

Gefen officials said the decoder converts the audio from a set-top box, media center PC, or Component video source so that it can be heard on an existing pair of analog loudspeakers. It supports any audio encoded in the Dolby 5.1 surround sound format.

“This is unique because it allows you to listen to movies using just two speakers, while you still enjoy that surround sound feeling,” said Hagai Gefen, president and CEO of Gefen, in a statement.

The Digital Audio Decoder provides two inputs (S/PDIF, TOSlink) and has a two-channel analog audio output. Users can switch between the two inputs using a selector on the Decoder. This feature allows both a set-top box and a computer to be connected and switched to any two-channel audio system, says the company.

With a built-in digital-to-analog converter, a digital interpolation filter, and support for up to six channels of audio encoded in Dolby Digital, the Decoder provides a robust audio conversion solution while reducing the need to upgrade audio equipment.
