Last week at Digital Signage Expo 2011 in Las Vegas, Planar Systems took the wraps off a new 82-inch LCD addition to its lineup of high-performance, easy-to-service displays for advertising and digital signage applications in airports, shopping malls, and other public spaces. The Planar d82L combines a slim profile, easy-access electronics, and advanced networking and controls in a unique, serviceable solution.

“The Planar d82L is tailored to reduce installation and maintenance costs for digital signage applications,” said Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing for Planar Systems, in a statement. “This new model demonstrates the company’s strategy to deliver innovative, specialty display solutions that provide superior image quality and a slim, accessible design that avoids the extra service costs and hassles typically associated with large displays.”

With a depth of only 3.9 inches, the Planar d82L complies with American with Disabilities (ADA) clearance requirements for public buildings and maximizes valuable space in crowded concourses and other public venues. The industrial, metal design and protective glass shield make the Planar d82L ideally suited for high-traffic spaces.

The new displays also comes with something the company calls AccessConsole, which provides lockable, flip-panel access to electronics directly above the screen (or to the side, if installed in portrait mode). Most components can be replaced without the inconvenience and cost of replacing the entire LCD. Moreover, the integrated MediaMount offers convenient, secure storage for media players and other hardware inside the AccessConsole. And built-in network and RS-232 controls make it possible to remotely monitor and manage settings.

The Planar d82L includes redundant power for uninterrupted operation. And because all the electronics are separated from the display and mounted above it, the architecture reduces potential heat-related wear on the commercial-grade panel. The two-piece design can also simplify installation because the system’s heaviest module weighs 70 pounds less than the next-ightest comparable display on the market, according to Planar.

The introduction of the d82L comes on the heels of Planar’s debut at Integrated Systems Europe 2011 of a 55-inch LCD model in its Clarity Matrix LCD Video Wall System family. The Clarity Matrix 55 delivers full HD resolution, an ultra-narrow image-to-image gap (5.7 mm), and incredibly thin profile (3.6 inches).

Like other Clarity Matrix displays, the 55-inch model separates the electronics, including fans, from the screen itself for easier management of videowalls. Planar’s EasyAxis Mounting System makes it easier to service a screen from the front, replace displays, adjust alignment, and more.

“We’ve experienced record-level customer adoption of the Clarity Matrix Video Wall System since we introduced it more than a year ago, and our next wave of innovation demanded larger, higher-resolution video walls with even smaller bezels,” said Davis.
