Tannoy has introduced its Kingdom Royal, a new flagship loudspeaker that company officials say brings together a new series of Tannoy reference components, a radical new cabinet, and the finest quality materials. It includes a high-gloss wood veneer, Italian leather trim, and a 12-inch dual-concentric driver with a cryogenically treated 3-inch HF dome and compression motor. Company officials say the speaker is characterized by ultra-low coloration, high efficiency, and musical integrity.

Tannoy says Kingdom Royal is the product of four years or research and development. Key to the design is the reference 12-inch driver. Its outer bass/midrange driver combines an ultralight, ultrarigid multifiber cone and precision edge-wound voice coil to a massive ferrite motor system for exceptional transient response across the LF to mid-bass spectrum, according to the company. Its hard-edge roll surround has low memory effect to further improve articulation in the mid and upper bass. This outer driver crosses over to the DC’s high frequency unit at a low 700Hz to ensure key vocal ranges are handled by the new tweeter, Tannoy officials said.

At 16kHz, the dual-concentric’s HF unit crosses over to the latest evolution of Tannoy’s SuperTweeter, which uses magnesium alloy dome for its coherence and even extension out to 54kHz. Each dome is vapor coated with a thin ceramic layer for high internal damping and low coloration. It is then plasma-treated by hand and bonded to the voice coil.

Company officials said the Kingdom Royal required the largest crossover Tannoy has ever produced, a double-decked design built on boards as wide as the cabinet interior. The entire crossover is decoupled from the cabinet base using a free-floating mounting system incorporating rubber suspension turrets and brass rods to separate the two layers. Once assembled, the entire crossover undergoes full deep cryogenic treatment to relieve component and conductor stress, an expensive process for such a large assembly, but one that should result in better musical cohesion and smoothness, according to Tannoy.

Kingdom Royal’s frequency response ranges from 24Hz to 54kHz (-6dB). Sensitivity is 96dB (2.38V @ 1m); nominal impedance is 8 ohms; and power handling is 300W RMS and 1,200W peak. It measures 50.2 by 23.0 by 23.6 inches and weighs 256 pounds.
