Tech Showcase: Projection Screens

Projection screen materials continue to evolve with regards to contrast and perceived “brightness” from the viewer’s perspective.

This month, we take a look at a variety of projection screens. Projection screen technology certainly has come a long way from even just a few years ago. Projection screen materials continue to evolve with regards to contrast and perceived “brightness” from the viewer’s perspective. The latest race is for “4K ready” projection screens, clearly a challenge as the video image resolution now quadruples!

The AV Stumpfl Fullwhite is a special projection screen that shows only the picture; the screen uses a 45-degree angle frame, so its interior structure is completely hidden. Fullwhite fits to current architecture of modern buildings and projection setups, allowing people to tell their story effectively. Thanks to the special frame design, installers wanting to use projection surfaces in interesting and compelling ways, multiple Fullwhite projection screens can be connected together to form cubes or other structures including real-time tracked and moving projection surfaces.

Da-Lite Parallax 0.8

The latest surface from Da-Lite, the Parallax 0.8 features an advanced optical lens system that rejects light. This new technology mimics the look of a television but without the glare from windows or lighting fixtures. The screen material contains micro layers that block and absorb light and provides a glare and speckle-free image. Viewing area is reported at 85-degree horizontal half angle and 17-degree vertical half angle.

Draper TecVision

When it introduced its award-winning TecVision Engineered Screen Technology, Draper limited the sizes to 15ft. in viewing height because this was the largest it could provide without seaming the viewing surface. Since then, Draper has leveraged its impressive seaming expertise and TecVision technology to come up with a way to make bigger surfaces. Instead of using traditional seams, or taking the very expensive approach of having a seamless substrate, Draper decided to fuse a base substrate that resulted in a flatter base material with a stronger weld (100 percent stronger). Optically seamless TecVision viewing surfaces are 4K ready and certified by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) for color accuracy, and are now available up to 23ft. high and 69ft. wide on Draper motorized and permanently tensioned screen models.

Dukane/Elite Quickstand 5 Second Series

The QuickStand 5-Second Projection Screen is a large-size, freestanding “pull-up” projection screen from Dukane. Its portable design makes it ideal for conference rooms and large-venue presentations on the go. Other large screens may require more than a half hour to assemble, attach the material, and adjust to the right height. The QS 5-Second Screen’s primary advantage is speed. It utilizes an innovative dual cross spring mechanism that allows it to be set up to its desired height in as little as five seconds. It uses Elite’s Green-guard Gold (UL2818) Certified Maxwhite FG 1.1 gain material with wide diffusion uniformity. It is encased in an ATA wheeled aluminum stage case for heavy travel and regular use while a drape kit is offered for added aesthetics.

Pro Display Sunscreen

Pro Display’s Sunscreen projection material provides true sun-readable front-projection screen technology. Designed for ultra-short-throw projection, it combines a highly reflective projection layer with a unique light-rejecting filter. This allows the screen to present an image in high artificial light or bright daylight — it even performs in direct sunlight. The product is available in standard diagonal sizes of 80in., 10in., and 12in., or in modular panels 1.6 meters x 0.9 meters. Applications include education, corporate boardrooms, meetings and conferences, TV studios, museums and visitor attractions, and retail.

RPV Evolution LaserPanel

RP Visual SolutionsEvolution Laser-Panel is a cost-effective, 100in. dnp flatscreen offering high-contrast images at a fraction of the cost of an LED flatscreen. They meet the users’ demands for large, easy-to-install display sizes while remaining affordable for companies, educational institutions, and homeowners. Based on optical screen technology, dnp LaserPanels are powered by a laser projector mounted over the screen, which shoots down from a steep angle. The display is mounted on the wall like an LED flatscreen. And since it is a short-throw solution, users never need to worry about stepping into the beam while presenting. The dnp LaserPanel is available in a standard version and a touch version for interactive presentations, and also is equipped with an interactive camera and IR pen.

Stewart Filmscreen Fideledy Vision

Designed for digital signage, broadcast, and staging applications, the innovative Fideledy Vision screen system from Stewart Filmscreen transforms LED displays, known for bright but harsh and pixelated appearances, into a diffuse, film-like appearance while also curing the annoying moiré interference that plagues broadcasters and filmmakers. Stewart Filmscreen engineers developed the system to give LED videowalls a true cinematic appearance.

Vutec SilverStar 3D-P

SilverStar 3D-P is Vutec’s award-winning 3D-P + 2D + HD in one projection screen. This screen is very distinctive and delivers brilliant picture quality, providing high brightness, vivid colors, ultra-high gain, high contrast, and a wide viewing area. SilverStar 3D-P’s performance begins with its innovative technology, a silver-based material to provide the ultimate performance. This technology increases color saturation while expanding contrast in controlled or uncontrolled lighting environments. Image brightness loss from viewing through 3D glasses diminishes approximately 50 percent. This is created by the polarization process that is creating the 3D effect. By utilizing SilverStar 3D-P, the viewer will reclaim light loss to produce a vivid 3D viewing experience. SilverStar 3D-P is custom made to order and provides a true cinematic experience.

PROJECTORS FOR PEACE

Light Artists Utilize Video Projection for Peace

As part of the international effort to raise awareness for the causes of peace and non-violence, a program called “Projectors for Peace” has been set up to accept donated video projection equipment for use by the NY Peace Coalition and its related organizations. The NY Peace Coalition is a designated 501(c) (3) and will provide receipts upon request.

If you have any old, used but working video projectors, please send them to: Projectors for Peace, c/o NYPC, 2006 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, NY 10462
