Strother Bullins on Denon Professional DN-700R Network SD/USB Recorder

The DN-700R is a flexible professional multi-format digital recorder with comprehensive I/O, useful for a wide range of applications in theaters and houses-of-worship, educational facilities, production and broadcast studios, and live performance. It also boasts notable network capabilities. It is intuitive in application, too; upon first use I barely cracked its quick start guide, easily digging in to capture stereo tracks from a live performance via the USB thumb drive on its front panel.

The unit records to SD/SDHC and USB media in MP3 and WAV formats, up to 24-bit/96kHz. Key features include Dual Record feature allows recording to two media options simultaneously for primary and backup recording, and its Relay Record feature continues recording to backup media when the selected (primary) media is full. Further, File Archiving features via FTP are available with a continuous, 24/7 record feature, insuring a single aural moment is never missed.

The DN-700R is a flexible professional multi-format digital recorder, useful in a wide range of applications.
The DN-700R’s I/O is comprehensive.

I/O features include independent and switchable XLR mic/line inputs with +48V phantom power provided for direct recording, dual RCA unbalanced analog inputs, AES/EBU XLR balanced and coaxial digital inputs, XLR and RCA analog dual outputs, AES/EBU XLR balanced and RCA coaxial digital outputs. Other useful perks include some remote control functionalities, a front-panel USB keyboard connection for file information input, EDL marking and file edit functions, a record monitor setting and an easy-to-read OLED display on its front panel.

Considering the dual SD/SDHC decks and USB slot that work collaboratively to capture audio in a number of orders and ways--and its high-resolution capability, notably world-class build quality, and great-sounding AD/DA convertors—the DN-700R is the digital recorder/player most audio pros would be comfortable relying on. When you consider its network integration capabilities and compatibility with a range of remote control interfaces—IR handset, Parallel GPIO, RS-232c and a network using built-in Web Remote—it is future-proofed, too. At $599, the DN-700R is a rock-solid stereo digital recorder built for the years ahead.
