Daystar TV Tunes Into Gepco to Meet Audio/Video Cable Needs

What began as the vision of a husband and wife in Alabama back in 1984 has blossomed into the second largest and fastest growing Christian television network in the world. Daystar Television Network, founded by Marcus and Joni Lamb, traces its roots back to WMCF-TV 45 in Montgomery, Ala. By 1985, Channel 45 became the first full-power Christian television station in Alabama. Two decades later, Daystar operates over 40 television stations in major markets across the United States (with construction permits for another 15) with production facilities in Dallas, Houston, and Denver. Having expanded well beyond the early days of Channel 45, Daystar’s 86,000-square-foot International Ministry Center, based in Bedford, Texas, includes two state-of-the-art production studios wired from top to bottom with Gepco cables.

“When we decided to move out of our previous facility to come to Daystar’s current headquarters, we chose Gepco cables because it’s all I’ve used for 20 years and the performance has always been exceptional,” says Steve McNeal, director of engineering for Daystar. “We’re using Gepco for pretty much everything but data and telephone, including audio, video, triax, control, and intercom. When all is said and done, we probably have well over 100 miles of Gepco cable installed throughout the facility.”

For installation in Daystar’s two studios, two production control rooms, four video editing suites, two audio editing suites, and a Network Operations Center, McNeal recently purchased VPM2000 HD coax, VDM230 Miniature HD coax, VT61859 and LVT61859 triax, 61801EZ single-pair audio, and GA618GFC multi-pair audio cables from Gepco. In addition, Gepco supplied Daystar with ADC patchbays, patchcords, crimp tools, XLR to BNC adapters, more than 10,000 connectors, DT multi-channel snake cable assemblies, and TT to XLR patchcord adapter cables.

This gear is being utilized in conjunction with state-of-the-art audio and video equipment used by Daystar. This includes 17 Hitachi Z3000 and Z4000 cameras in the television studios and remote truck, Yamaha digital consoles featured in the audio production and editing suites, and 7 Miranda Kaleido-K2 modular multi-image display processors to display monitor images in the Network’s Operations Center, Production Control, and Audio rooms. Additionally, Daystar has implemented a fairly innovative system that enables them to monitor any of the 70-plus computers from any of the 48 dedicated workstations at the headquarters. Using Raritan, a computer system originally designed to be used by classroom teachers to work concurrently with students, the network can now monitor the return feeds as well as any other source from not only the control rooms, but also throughout the facility.

“The popularity of Daystar Television Network programming continues to grow,” McNeal says. “We’ve already started to outgrow our new headquarters and will need to expand the facility again in the near future. When we do, we’ll be looking to Gepco to help meet our cabling needs.”
