NASA has chosen Opticomm fiber-optic communication systems in the yearlong video surveillance system upgrade at its Wallops Island, Va., facility, which is around 90 miles from Norfolk, Va. This project will allow NASA to have video surveillance along all its operating areas and allow remote range control from various facilities.

Once complete, NASA will have an enhanced, more reliable and flexible surveillance system. Using Opticomm fiber-optic systems, NASA will be able to use a single fiber, rather than multiple fibers, to transmit audio, video, and data in almost all cases.

Cameras around the facility allow operators to look at airfields, fueling areas, launch gantries, launch pads, and runways such as the UAV and unmanned vehicle runways on the island. Because of the versatility of the Opticomm systems, cameras can be controlled remotely. The data being transmitted supports tests on the Research Range airport runway, vehicle and motor test areas, and rocket launch operations.

NASA plans include the use and integration of Opticomm’s most recent platform, the modular Optiva series of video, audio, and data communication systems.

Al Winbrow, hardware engineer for LJT, the contractor for the upgrade, says, “[I chose Opticomm because] I’ve been using Opticomm for seven or eight years and haven’t had any real problems except for lightning strikes, which they can’t do anything about.”
