The makers of modern routers and switchers seem to be on top of the challenge to make these devices increasingly feature-packed and control-system compatible, while at the same time expanding their ease of use. There is increasingly more going on behind the scenes in the chips with each model that enters the market, and the examples shown here demonstrate these trends.

The UT250-101 Under Table Matrix Switcher from Altinex is an 8x4 VGA computer video and audio matrix switcher that can direct and manage VGA video signals from multiple laptop computers and document cameras. The switcher provides eight VGA-UXGA computer video inputs and eight 3.5mm stereo inputs, and routes them to any of four outputs using its built-in, 16-button “Show Me” controller or RS-232 from a remote source such as the Altinex MultiTouch touchscreen panels. Any input can be switched to two or all four of the video outputs.

One of the more versatile presentation switchers from AMX is the Enova DVX-3155HD, which can function as a matrix switcher, scaler, A-to-D converter, twisted-pair transmitter, and amplifier with built-in audio processing. The unit can switch video in 10x4 and audio in 14x4 with the capability to send audio, video bi-directional control, and Ethernet up to 320ft. on one standard twisted-pair cable. It can accept RGBHV, component, S-Video, composite, HDMI/HDCP and DVI signals all on the same connector. Included is support for 3D and deep color.

Analog Way SmartMatriX Ultra

Analog Way has recently introduced the Smart Matrix Ultra, a new multiscreen seamless switcher based on Analog Way’s new LiveCore platform. It can accommodate a number of different input video formats including six HDMI, nine DVI-D, three DisplayPort, 12 3G-SDI, and 12 universal analog. The included SFP Cage on the outputs is compatible with a large range of SFP optical modules. Two of the units can be linked for adding and sharing of outputs and inputs. The SmartMatriX Ultra can be controlled directly from its front panel or using web remote control software.

The AT-PRO3HD44M HDMI 4x4 matrix switcher from Atlona extends HDMI from sources up to 230ft. over Cat-6a cables at 1080p and 1920x1200, or 197ft. with Cat-5e/6 cables. The unit allows control of up to eight devices through IR remote control, RS-232, third-party IR control boxes, and the front panel. It also has digital audio S/PDIF loop-outs that allow audio distribution to distant devices. S/PDIF output supports PCM two-channel, Dolby 2.0, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1 digital audio formats. Also featured are programmable EDID memory presets.

Audio Authority markets the ADX-1616 as a matrix switcher capable of routing multiple audio sources to multiple zones with custom 10-band EQ control per zone and a low pass filter for adding subwoofers to zones. A variety of third-party control systems can be used with the ADX Series audio switchers connecting through Ethernet, IR, and RS-232. The 2RU unit also provides zone grouping and source/zone combinations and it can be set up and controlled using a PC via Ethernet, USB, or a serial interface.

Aurora Multimedia now incorporates HDBaseT Cat I/O cards on its second-generation Digital Extreme Matrix (DMX) switchers. The DXM-3232-G2 offers 1080p 60Hz transmission over Cat cable up to 600ft., and the HDBaseT Tx/Rx modules are remotely powered by the DXM units over the Cat cable. There is a wide range of input cards to accommodate video signal formats including fiber, composite, component, 3G/HD/SD SDI, and HDMI. Also featured is auto EDID learning and management for simple setup and operation and switching can be completely controlled on RS-232.

The FSN-1004 multi-format presentation switcher from Barco allows users to select up to 10 video sources in a variety of formats and either free run or locked to the unit’s internal sync. The system includes the multiviewer (MVR) for monitoring up to 16 sources and display of either timecode or a realtime clock from the MVR card’s LTC input connector. With the user interface program on Mac or PC, up to 1,000 memory registers on the configuration can be stored and recalled.

Designed by Black Box Network Services for cross switching multiple computer video and audio signals, the AVSW-DVI 8x8 matrix switch provides a power-fail local protection function, LCD display, separate audio (balanced or unbalanced), and video switching capability. Using its RS-232 interface, the unit can be used with a PC or third-party control system while its adaptable signal compensation can extend the input distance up to 70ft. The switcher can also be controlled on the front panel or by using the supplied remote control unit.

As a routing solution for broadcast and video production facilities, the Videohub family of switchers from Blackmagic Design works with SD, HD, 3Gb/s SDI video, and RS-422 control signals to provide plant-wide video interconnection of workstations and decks. The Smart Videohub is a 16x16 version that provides re-clocking with built-in Ethernet, USB, and serial router control. Its 1RU control panel allows local operation with large, brightly lit buttons. The router features auto detection of SD, HD, or 3 Gb/s SDI along with simultaneous routing of 2K, HD, SD video, and DVB-ASI.

Available in sizes from 4x4 up to 32x32, the XTP CrossPoint 3200 series modular digital matrix switchers from Extron feature a 15.2Gbps data rate digital backplane, RS-232 insertion from the Ethernet control port and customizable setup through the system’s assortment of I/O boards. HDCP-compliant operation and Speedswitch technology allow rapid switching of HDCP-encrypted content. User-friendly control software provides system configuration for features such as I/O memory presets and the QS-FPC QuickSwitch Front Panel Controller with tri-color backlit buttons.

Up to nine digital and analog sources can be routed to as many as four digital displays on HDMI v1.3 with the DV-MFSW-94, a 3RU hybrid matrix switcher introduced by FSR at InfoComm 2012. Gefen’s one-box, rack-mountable 8x8 Crosspoint Matrix for HDMI has signal extension capabilities built into the same frame and routes eight high-def sources to eight displays or projectors using HDMI. All eight outputs can be extended using one Cat-5 cable per display up to 330ft., and eight sender units are packaged within the matrix enclosure. Gefen’s ELR technology uses HDBaseT and enables long-distance delivery of 1080p full HD with multi-channel audio and 3DTV pass-through. This matrix uses small receiver units, which are powered over the Cat-5 and installed at the extended display or projector location.

Designed by IHSE USA to extend practically any USB, audio, or serial device up to 918ft. over Cat-X cabling, the Draco tera compact 8 can extend and switch signals with video resolution up to 2048x1152@60Hz. IHSE USA’s flex-port technology allows each port to auto-configure itself as a source or destination and KVM configurations can range from a single computer to seven consoles or one user to seven CPU devices or any combination in between. Control options include an on-screen display, Java-based control software and third-party controllers with the expanded API command protocol. The unit can also be integrated with larger KVM networks.

The KanexPro HDMM3232A 32x32 modular matrix switcher allows custom configuration with any combination of I/O cards, and with cross-switching ranging from VGA, DVI, HDMI, SD/HD/3G-SDI, to HDMI over twisted-pair and fiber-optic hot-swappable input and output cards. The 5RU rack frame also features power-fail memory function and audio breakaway. It is fully controllable through RS-232 and optional TCP/IP when used with third-party control systems. The front panel LCD can be used for operation and to monitor the unit’s working status.

The latest line of digital matrix switchers from Lightware USA is the 25G Hybrid, which operates with Lightware’s Modular Extender (MODEX) family of signal extenders. The switcher manages and distributes all digital and analog signals over a single Cat-5 cable or fiber via specially developed input/output cards combined with audio add-ons. Handling HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort1.2 video signals, it is also ready for 4K and stereo 3D formats. The multilayer switching design allows breakaway routing for all signal types where they are recombined at the output for a single connection.

Magenta’s Mondo Matrix III features optional, addressable duplex capability and a variety of redundancy and performance improvements. This enables digital signage applications to collect individual display data and metrics in addition to providing independent control over each display. Like its predecessor, the field upgradable Mondo III also allows for the addition of inputs and outputs in increments of 16, and supports a maximum configuration of 256x512. Compatibility with all MultiView products enables the extension of 1920x1200 video, stereo audio, and serial signals over a range of 2000ft.

Opticis markets the OMM-1000 16x16 DVI Electrical/Optical Router to switch up to 16 DVI inputs to 16 digital displays using general PC software like Hyperlink terminal, Telnet or web browser. Controllable through the front panel, RS-232, or IP, the switcher is configured using 4x4 DVI I/0 cards inserted into the rear of the rack frame. Capable of handling video resolution up to 1920x1200@60Hz, the OMM-1000 supports EDID in three modes: Default Mode, Auto Mix Mode, and Output Copy Mode. Reliability is assured through dual hot-swappable power supplies and it can work with Opticis DVI optical extenders for long-distance transmission.

The OMX-16 non-blocking crosspoint switcher from Opticomm handles digital signals using either a high-speed optical blade up to 4.25 Gbps per port (OMX-SFP-B ) holding up to 16 Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver modules or the 10/100/1000 copper Ethernet blade (OMX-ETH-B). A physical layer switch, the OMX-16 does not alter the protocol or structure of data. The unit enables cross connection between copper and optical cables and it provides conversion between multimode and single-mode fiber lines. The OMX-16 is the single-card unit but Opticomm offers OMX switchers with up to 288 ports.

Capable of routing high-definition video and up to 7.1 channel audio from eight HDMI sources to any of eight remote displays, the Pesa PRO-8x8-HDMI-CAT 8x8 HDMI router accomplishes this through Cat-5/5e/6 cabling. The router allows any source to be displayed on any combination of displays using panel buttons, IR remote, USB, or serial control. Each receiver unit has an AV signal port and an accompanying control port, both on RJ-45s. It also has a push button for sequential source selection and an eight-level equalization control.

The Binary HDMI 4x4 matrix switcher from SnapAV offers four simultaneous HDMI and Cat-5e outputs switched from four HDMI inputs. Four bidirectional IR paths between sources and displays allow for transmission distances up to 130ft. with the optional 1-Cat receivers. Integrated system controllers can operate the switcher using either IR or bidirectional RS 232. The unit fits a single rack space while front-panel indicators show source status and input/output connections, and it includes support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master audio.

For end-to-end fiber routing of video and peripheral signals over single-mode and multimode fiber, the 6.22Gbps MX48 is protocol agnostic. Thinklogical has designed it with redundant, hot-swappable, current-sharing power supply modules. Expandable from 16x16 up to 48x48, it supports a number of different formats including DVI, Dual-link DVI, 3G, HD, SD SDI, Dual-link SDI, USB HID, USB 1.1, USB 2.0 (high speed, full 480 Mbs), FireWire 800, serial, PS/2, and bidirectional audio. The unit is equipped with LC-type fiber connections and it can be controlled through a network or serial terminal.

TV One designed the C3-340 CORIO matrix to provide up, down, and cross conversion between analog and digital video formats through 3G-SDI. Housed in a 4RU frame, the switcher can be custom configured with a choice of I/O modules including up to 32 I/O for DVI, HDMI, 3G-SDI, RGB/YPbPr, and up to 60 I/O for HD/SD-SDI using all 4x input modules. The unit can be controlled through IP or serial connections, and Windows-based software is provided for control and setup. A single monitoring card allows video to be viewed on 1 or 2 outputs for signal verification.

Utah Scientific has introduced an extension of the UTAH-100/UDS routing switcher family to provide support for the new 4K (6 Gbps) signal format. Routers in this new series range from 32x32 to 144x144 and offer the same control options as the very successful UDS routers introduced in 2012. Complementing the new 4K routers will be a new 4K signal-processing module that provides multiplexing and demultiplexing of 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps streams to and from the 6Gbps signal.
