St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., has recently installed Communications Specialties’ Pure Digital Fiberlink 7220 Series for high-resolution video and audio as part of a multi-camera video system that allows realtime observation of operating room procedures from a remote location.

Atlantic Video Productions and Internet Services, Inc. in Lakeville, Mass., selected the 7220 Series for the installation because it supports and transmits crystal clear, high-resolution images with no degradation—an absolute must when viewing medical procedures. In the O.R., four standard-definition and four Sony high-definition video cameras send 1080i RGBHV signals through an Edirol V-440 HD router, which are then transmitted via the 7220 transmitter unit to a receiver site approximately 700 feet away.

At the receiver site—a theater-style classroom for doctors—a 7223 receiver unit feeds the video and audio to a NEC 61in. plasma display. A second system is used to feed audio back to the O.R. so that the instructor and guests can speak to the medical staff performing various procedures. Gordon MacPherson, president of Atlantic Video Productions and Internet Services, says that the new system was purchased and installed in January 2006. “Everything worked perfectly right out of the box and required little technical expertise,” he explains.

Atlantic’s goal is to develop four to five additional sites throughout the United States in the near future. The plans include creating two mobile multi-camera HD production units that will use individual fiber-optic systems directly from the cameras to the HD video switcher and then transmit the signals to a satellite truck or other distribution system.

The Pure Digital Fiberlink 7220 Series digitally transmits high-resolution RGB (up to WXGA) and stereo audio over one single mode or multimode fiber-optic core. It is compatible with any type of display device that supports VGA, SVGA, XGA, and WXGA, plus HDTV resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080i (RGBHV format only).
