Tech Showcase: HDBaseT Extenders

The latest signal distribution products.

HDBaseT is here to stay and the evolution of its hardware implementations has never been more interesting. The first iteration has been standalone transmitter/receiver pairs and the market for that is still in full swing. But already, there are plenty of products representing phase two of HDBaseT implementation with built-in transmission capability on dedicated HDBaseT output ports. With projectors and other devices using built-in receivers, the transformation is still in progress. But it pays to check the specs to make sure that you have all the features needed at both ends of the line, particularly when it comes to power transmission.

Apantac HDBT-1-RAP

The new MU400-123 transmitter and MU500-122 receiver units from Altinex have bidirectional capability to send AC power to the far end through the Cat-6 cable and bring an HDMI signal back to the near end. Fully compliant with HDMI and HDCP standards, the units also carry RS-232 and IR for operation and control of third-party products. The MU400-123 power output can handle a load up to 150W and it automatically shuts down if it exceeds safe parameters.

Applicable for any pro AV application that requires extending HDMI signals up to 330ft., Apantac’s HDBT-1-EAP/1-RAP is a single-port HDBaseT extender and receiver set supporting HDMI and DVI formats, 1080P, and 3D. Either module can be powered from the other over the Cat-X cable or it can use a local 48VDC power supply. The units also carry RS-232 and IR control signals, and there are terminal blocks on each unit for transmission of GPI signals.

Aten VE801T/R

The VE801 HDMI HDBaseT-Lite extender from Aten can take an HDMI video signal up to 230ft. from the source using one Cat-5e/6/6a cable. It supports 3D, deep color and 4K image resolutions, plus Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS HD audio, and it is HDCP compatible. The EDID Expert configures optimum EDID settings, and the top panel has power and signal status LEDs. The side panels have anti-slip grooves to help prevent dropping the hardware.

Atlona AT-UHDEX-100CE-KIT

Atlona’s top-of-the-line AT-UHDEX-100CE-KIT transmitter/receiver kit allows cable runs up to 328ft. It utilizes IEEE 802.3af standard 48V Power over Ethernet for receiver power, and provides passthrough of bidirectional Ethernet and control signals. The AT-UHD-EX-100CE-KIT offers configuration-free setup and field-updateable firmware, rear-panel I/O ports, and low-profile enclosures for easy installation into racks and confined spaces behind displays. The extender kits in the new series support 4K/UHD video @60Hz, they provide passthrough of HDCP 2.2 content, support EDID communication, and employ HDBaseT technology for extending signals.

Audio Authority HBT200KIT

Audio Authority built support for 3D video transmission to compatible TVs into the HBT200KIT, which consists of the HBT200T transmitter and the HBT200R receiver. With two-way IR and RS-232, the link has full HDMI and HDCP compliance, and it can handle up to 7.1 channel uncompressed audio transmission. The units support 1080p/12-bit video and they can extend the signals up to 330 ft. via one Cat-5e/6 cable. Each unit is provided with a 5VDC power adapter.

Aurora Multimedia DXE-CAT-S1/S2

A member of the Digital Xtreme Series from Aurora Multimedia, the DXE-CATS1 extension system can be powered from either end using a single 24V AC adapter and it can transmit HDMI up to 1080p@60Hz 230ft. over one Cat-5e/6/7 cable. For easier rack mounting, all connectors are on one side including the IR and RS-232 ports. The front panel has status LEDs for all signals and a rack-mounting bracket and wall-mounting tabs are furnished with the unit.

Black Box HDMI 5Play Extender 4K

Tested and certified by the HDBaseT Alliance, the HDMI 5Play Extender 4K from Black Box Network Services can control AV source equipment at the screen while transmitting Ethernet data to a remote location. Over a single Cat-5e/6 cable, the transmitter-receiver combo extends up to 4K video and audio, plus IR and serial RS-232 control signals up to 320ft. Because it features 100BaseT Ethernet passthrough, both HDMI and Ethernet streaming video can be sent to a display over the same non-networked cable link.

Broadata Communications LBC-HDMI-R-WP

Broadata Communications offers a great example of the HDBaseT wallplates now available with a transmission range of up to 230ft. and Power over HDBaseT (PoH) on either the transmitter or receiver unit. Monitored by power and link indicators, the LBCHDMI-T/R-WP provides quick and easy installation handling resolution up to 4Kx2K and 1080p@60Hz or 1920×1200@60Hz. The system is fully compatible with Broadata’s LBC and LBH Series products, and the protocol is DDC/EDID/HDCP capable.

The circuitry will sense PoH compliance and only provide power to PoH compliant devices. The receiver is powered over the twisted pair by the transmitter. Heavy-duty mounting brackets are included and multiple extender pairs can be cascaded for applications that require extreme distances.

Factor Electronics HDBaseT-Baluns

Factor Electronics is set to release two new HDBaseT-Balun sets utilizing the Valens VS010 & VS100 chipsets. POH increases the operating voltage to 12VDC and delivers the power over the Cat-5/6 cable to the connected balun. Either unit can power the other over the Cat-5/6. The HDBaseT-Balun provides 4K resolutions to 130ft. and 1080p resolutions to 230ft. while the HD100BaseT-Balun provides 4K resolutions to 230ft. and 1080p resolutions to 300ft.
