Despite the wonders of today’s tech gear, its functionality depends a great deal on how it is set up to interface with the humans who operate it. The technology furniture that is selected and how it is itself configured and installed plays a huge role in the quality of the experience. Multiply a few awkward reaches or bends of the body against the number of times they occur, and a few inches of height or width in the right place can make all the difference. As with the tech gear itself, good planning and proper selection of the housing and mounting is paramount. The examples below not only provide organization and operator comfort. They also add a substantial coolness factor.
To handily bridge the transition from analog to digital, the TNP528S factory-wired Tilt’n Plug interconnect panel from Altinex has twin HDMI and VGA connections along with two U.S. power connectors (12A), two 3.5mm mini audio, two RJ-45 Ethernet jacks, and a USB type A input connector. The panel top lines up nearly flush with a table or podium surface. With a slight push, the panel tilts up smoothly to reveal the connectors, each of which is passive and has a 6ft. cable passing through the bottom of the unit. Pushing the panel down locks it into the hidden position. The standard finish is black matte; mirror finish bezels and custom finishes are available.
A wall-mounted solution to a compact workspace, the eNook Standard has a tilt-out desk surface that can be adjusted for different height settings. When the desk surface is flipped down, it reveals a fabric back panel that can be used as a bulletin board, or the same space can be fitted with height adjustable shelves to hold small objects. The steel frame unit has two locking doors, a six-outlet surge protector, cable clips, and an inner metal tray. Anthro designed it to be a perfect stand-up laptop station, and when closed, it only extends 7in. from the wall. The bottom area provides uncluttered room for cables and connectors while the flip-down desktop has locking doors.
Designed and engineered by Argosy Console to accommodate a variety of control surfaces or consoles, the Eclipse furniture system allows musical artists and sound engineers to create, and later expand, the console to adapt to their needs. Desk space or easily accessible 19in. rack space may be integrated on either end to create an elegant and inspiring centerpiece to the studio. Using a modular and expandable aluminum rail system, the Argosy Eclipse allows clients to update their system without completely replacing their technical furniture solution. For consistent comfort during long sessions, the desk and rack sections are fitted with padded armrests.
The WMA16-19-HR 16RU WMA half rack from Atlas Sound is a wall-mounted equipment enclosure for tight spaces where access to components would normally be very difficult. Its ingenious swing-down mechanism puts the rear side of the equipment within easy reach. This model’s front 12-gauge adjustable CRS rack rails are finished with black Zinc plating and tapped at 10-32. The rack can be fitted with the optional EFP3-HR fan unit for additional ventilation. The WMA16-19-HR is constructed of 16-guage CRS and finished in a black electrostatic powder coat. On the sides, there are four sets of mount points for industry-standard 119mm fans. Each cabinet comes with 100 black 10-32 rack screws.
Avteq has a presentation and conferencing solution in the Technology Credenza3-V/L that can be custom finished in veneer or laminate to match any room décor. The top of the credenza can support up to a single 103in. or twin 80in. flatpanel displays with an integrated universal screen mounting system. To accommodate additional equipment, it includes a sliding and rotating 12RU rack on one end. There is a six-port rack-mounted power strip and surge protector. The open-back design allows for plenty of ventilation for the powered gear inside, and for videoconferencing, there is an integrated camera-mounting platform that is adjustable for best eye contact. For the ultimate in customization, the unit can also be ordered as a steel-frame skeleton with accompanying CAD drawings.

For executive boardrooms, classrooms, and conference rooms, the Collaborate Media Stand takes videoconferencing equipment to any location in the building where it’s needed with an adjustable display mount to handle flatpanels from 40in. to 65in. and up to 170lbs. ClearOne designed it to accommodate various conference table heights. Customized options include adjustable-height PTZ camera shelf and a 4RU rack that provides front-panel access for the videoconferencing codec and other gear while allowing it all to stay connected and moved together. The caster kit allows smooth mobility, and the whole unit fits through standard doorways and elevators. The stand is made of heavy gauge steel, and it has an 800lb. weight carrying capacity.
When the room décor requires a more refined look than a metal rack, Da-Lite suggests its wood-finished equipment rack carts for the job. Available in sizes up to 30RU, the carts are equipped with dual air vents, a fan, and a six-outlet power strip with surge suppressor. Locking front and rear Plexiglas doors protect the gear inside while 3in. casters give it all a smooth ride. The 17RU size also has a pull-out keyboard shelf. All sizes can be ordered with optional fixed and sliding single rack-space shelves. All models are available in a range of veneer and laminate finishes including maple, oak, walnut, and mahogany. Each includes a 2.375in. cable hole and grommet in the rear of the top and bottom panels.
For a clean and uncluttered look in the videoconferencing room, Exact Furniture designed the MC-364 Videoconferencing Credenza to allow cables to be run inside the supporting poles for the optional LCD video monitor mount. The supporting poles extend all the way down through the middle of the cabinet, and there is room in the outer compartments for 12-unit rack rails. The locking removable rear access panel aids in equipment installation. Cabling is facilitated by the grommets in the bottom and rear of the credenza, and by the shortened internal dividers. Among the standard features are locking Euro-hinged doors, casters, and standard finish colors. Options include adjustable shelves, a cable well with laptop connections and AC outlet, ventilation panels, electronics locks, eight-outlet power bar, and custom laminates.
The TeamWork 601 from Extron is a pre-configured collaboration system for four digital and two analog sources. Interfacing through a Cable Cubby enclosure that incorporates AC outlets, the system can connect all six source devices for team projects, and it can be integrated into a wide variety of existing furniture systems by using optional mounting hardware to accommodate various surfaces and work table designs. Included are a switcher, system controller, and all the necessary cables for connections. The “Show Me” cable is connected to a laptop or tablet to start the system. Pressing the “Share” button directs the switcher to select the appropriate input. The Cable Cubby is a durable metal enclosure that can be mounted into a tabletop or other flat surface.
Hergo intended the Technical Work Bench to allow the ultimate in customization to suit the task at hand with its triple-frame base, overhead light assembly, and high-pressure laminated 72in.-wide desktop. The vertical back can hold monitors, tool trolleys, bookshelves, or storage bins while options such as peg, cork, and whiteboards fine tune the bench to the job. The 36in. work surface depth provides plenty of room, and the vertical cable-management raceways keep the work area clear of clutter.
