SMART Technologies Inc. announced the installation of Rear Projection SMART Board(TM) interactive whiteboards in a high-end, simulation-based training system for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Canada's Department of National Defence (DND). Militaries around the world are implementing simulation-based training as a cost-effective and realistic alternative to traditional training models. The SMART Board interactive whiteboards are components of the Atlantis Integrated Maintenance Training System (IMTS), a simulation-based system developed by Atlantis Systems International. The interactive whiteboards provide touch capability for interactive training, and the large-area, high-resolution display necessary to show graphically intensive software applications. The IMTS supports aircraft maintenance training for RAAF's F/A-18s and the DND's CF-18s.

The IMTS offers efficient, hands-on training in areas of operation, fault location and repair, troubleshooting and routine maintenance. For the RAAF and DND, each IMTS suite includes two Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboards, a replicated cockpit, an electrical checkout panel and an equipment rack. The aircraft is displayed in either 2D or 3D mode over both interactive whiteboard screens, and users simply touch the SMART Board interactive whiteboard's 72" (182.9-cm) screen to navigate around the aircraft to access and control its parts. For example, if there is a fault in the undercarriage, students would move the touch-responsive panels, dials and levers with their fingers to reach and repair the undercarriage. Videos then play out scenario outcomes on the interactive whiteboards. Instructors can also write notes in digital ink over the images and edit, save, print and e-mail those files.

"The SMART Board interactive whiteboard's tactile control helps differentiate the IMTS from other simulation systems," says Martyn Exon, Atlantis's general manager. "Our clients require a large-format, digitally interactive, high-resolution display in order to effectively teach complex mechanical systems, and the SMART Board interactive whiteboard meets those needs."

"The ability to interact with 3D information is essential for effective simulation-based training," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART's president and co-CEO. "By incorporating the SMART Board interactive whiteboard's large display and interactive capabilities into the IMTS, Atlantis Systems has provided its customers with an integrated solution at a fraction of the price of a plane and a hangar."

The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is the world's leading interactive whiteboard. Simply by touching the large display, users can access and control any computer application or multimedia platform, including the Internet, CD-ROMs and DVDs. The Rear Projection SMART Board interactive whiteboard offers interactive functionality with the shadow-free benefits of a rear-projection display and integrated projector. With SMART Board software, users can write over applications in digital ink and then edit, save, print or post their notes to a website for future reference.

SMART Board interactive whiteboards are used in classrooms, briefing rooms and boardrooms around the world, helping people to collaborate effectively whether they are in the same room or in another location. Feature-rich software and intuitive functionality make the SMART Board interactive whiteboard the number one choice of educators, presenters and trainers in more than 75 countries.
