The Spyders that caused a stir at NAB 2004 are now spreading worldwide. Vista Systems has begun shipping its new Spyder product line unveiled at the convention earlier this year. Among the first recipients are Video Networks in Gaithersburg, Maryland; Quince Imaging in Herndon, Virginia; Solotech in Montreal; A Better Resolution in Boston; Presentation Specialties in Archer, Florida; Media Solutions in Las Vegas; High Resolution Engineering in Clarkston, Michigan; and Primetec in Goteborg, Sweden.

The small and flexible Spyder offers AV presentation producers and rental and staging companies a cost-effective powerful realtime compositing and windowing environment plus the superb image quality and processing capabilities for which Vista Systems’ Montage is known.

Customers worldwide have embraced the Spyder family of products for their full slate of Montage-style features and benefits at a lower price point. The Spyder is capable of handling high-resolution HD-SDI and DVI formats and has extensive expansion capabilities.

The Spyder 200 and 300 series build on the Montage system introduced by Vista Systems last year. These products provide the same key benefits as Montage -- flexibility for mixing sources in multiple windows, greater clarity of signal processing, seamless widescreen displays -- plus realtime compositing for high-resolution applications in a modular, scaleable package.

Customers can deploy Spyder products alone or combine them like building blocks, integrating any model from the 200 series with the 300 series to accommodate any application from a small plasma screen to multiple screens. Two-year old High Resolution Engineering, in suburban Detroit, provides event producers with widescreen and high-resolution solutions with an inventory of Montage and Spyder systems. It recently took delivery of a pair of Spyder 344s with 4-input/4-output processors.

“The Spyder 344 gives us the most flexibility,” says Greg Byrnes, who is partnered with Mike Taylor in the company. “We can use the systems separately or combine them for a larger-output display.” From the start High Resolution Engineering has been “very focused on Montage,” Byrnes notes. “It was the first product that got right the concept of delivering high-quality images to big screens.” But many of the company’s clients didn’t have the budget for Montage or the need for its extraordinary power. “They may have wanted the quality, the processing, the look of Montage, and now the Spyder can deliver it at a much more affordable price point.”

Since the Spyder “only occupies three rack units, its footprint is ideal for venues where space is limited and Montage is too big,” he adds. Byrnes doesn’t believe the Spyder will obsolete his company’s investment in Montage. “The Spyder has huge market potential but is also a companion product to Montage. It will drive producers to Montage when they have a certain level of event. And we want to provide both of these solutions.”
