Hot off of CES 2017, where we were demonstrating our unique Audio Spotlight directional speaker technology, and showing off the brand new OEM & Consumer designs, Holosonics’ founder, Joe Pompei, was invited by the MIT Industrial Liaison Program to speak at the 2017 Technology and the Corporation Conference in Japan.

The conference featured future trends of research at MIT and highlighted advances in key areas, including new materials, electronics, information technology, chemical engineering, as well as other topics. Dr. Pompei was on hand to present how the Audio Spotlight, a ground breaking  technology he created at MIT’s Media Lab, has grown into a successful consumer and business product used by thousands of the world’s leading venues and corporations. 

Audio Spotlight Technology

A tight as light™ beam of ultrasound is used, enabling unprecedented control over audio distribution, and true surround-sound positioning.  Sound can be beamed directly to one listener, while others hear but a whisper, or projected against any surface, just like light, to create real sound at any position. For over a decade, the Audio Spotlight directional audio technology has been regularly used for enhancing a wide variety of commercial applications including museums and galleries, digital signage, retail displays, trade exhibits, and art installations all around the world.

The Future of Audio Spotlight Technology

Having advanced the technology even further with their new OEM and consumer product designs, Holosonics is pioneering the concept of directional audio for use in the average home, for applications such as private listening in any shared space, assisted listening for the hard of hearing, or even watching TV in bed without disrupting a partner’s sleep. 

New audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X allow “rendering” of audio objects to specific points in space.  While normally this would rely on speakers covering the walls and ceiling, the Audio Spotlight technology uniquely allows “audio projection” – just like a light projector for images. These sonic images appear at specific locations, or flying by the listener. It becomes a truly unique and immersive listening experience, without the extraordinary cost of multiple speakers.
