SDVoE Alliance Members Gather to Plot the Future of AVoIP

Futuresource keynote confirms what members know – expect explosive growth in networked AV deployments in 2018

SDVoE Alliance members spent two days in Montreal recently discussing the state of SDVoE deployments in Pro AV today and planning the roadmap for 2018 and beyond. Thirty participants from the 28 member companies were also treated to a keynote, “AVoIP Market Development & Outlook”, by Ben Davis of Futuresource Consulting Ltd.

Key findings indicate AVoIP technology becoming increasingly mainstream but still in the early adopter’s stage of the Innovation Adoption Lifecycle with less than 5% penetration in the market for pro AV ports requiring extension (as of 2016). Demand for AVoIP solutions is expected to grow rapidly in the short to mid term, replacing conventional matrix switches and multiviewers. The growing availability of low/zero latency solutions such as those based on SDVoE technology, and the concomitant reductions in cost, are driving adoption across major verticals – education, healthcare, enterprise, entertainment, hospitality, retail, houses of worship, government, military, industry and security. Ever-increasing resolution requirements will ensure demand for low/zero latency solutions persists.

Challenges that have led to slow AVoIP adoption to date include the lack of standardization and the lack of networking expertise on the part of integrators. Alliance members agreed to redouble efforts to educate the AV community on effective AVoIP system design, and IT concepts more generally.

“Feedback from members confirms the research findings that the outlook is bright for SDVoE technology and the SDVoE Alliance,” said Justin Kennington, president of the SDVoE Alliance. “And as the fastest growing industry alliance in the history of Pro AV, we are ideally positioned to overcome the challenges we face. We offer a standardized hardware and software platform for zero-latency, uncompromised video distribution and we are providing the education the market needs, including a full slate of sessions at ISE 2018.”

At ISE 2018, free case study sessions, AVIXA AV/IT Workshops and Commercial Solutions Theatre presentations will familiarize system integrators, designers, consultants, installers and manufacturers with various aspects of SDVoE technology. Focus will be on networking considerations, compression trade-offs and simplified video system design. The schedule and a full description of all sessions is available at http://sdvoe.org/events/ise-2018-education-and-training/.

During the meeting, the 2018 SDVoE Alliance board of directors was nominated as well. This year’s board members are Amir Bar-Niv of Aquantia, Clark Williams of Christie Digital, Laurent Masia of NETGEAR, Justin Kennington of Semtech, Toru Suzuki of Sony, Bob Michaels of ZeeVee and Keith Kennedy of Grandbeing.

About the SDVoE Alliance
SDVoE is an initialism for “Software Defined Video over Ethernet”. The SDVoE Alliance is a nonprofit consortium of technology providers collaborating to standardize the adoption of Ethernet to transport AV signals in professional AV environments, and to create an ecosystem around SDVoE technology allowing software to define AV applications. The alliance participates in tradeshows and conferences, publishes white papers and case studies and promotes SDVoE technology, and solutions based on the technology, to system integrators, designers and consultants. Training and installer certification are also part of the mandate. The SDVoE Alliance founding members are Aquantia, Christie Digital, NETGEAR, Semtech, Sony and ZeeVee. All interested parties are invited to join the alliance and work toward its goals. For more information, visit sdvoe.org and follow us on Twitter @SDVoE.
