Passion City Church (PCC) is a new, vibrant, and growing church in the upscale Buckhead section of Atlanta. From the outside, its home in a retrofitted PGA superstore is a sleek, ultra contemporary white edifice—more like a media company or a modern art museum than what is traditionally seen as a church. Inside, a powerful rock-and-roll worship experience is central to the culture of this church. The capabilities of the sound system, lighting, and video are maximized to create a sensory experience that connects spiritually with a modern generation.
With this in mind, the AV systems in Passion City Church’s new home had to be world class from the quality of the sound and video to the wiring and documentation, says Michael Wright, managing partner at Blue Hat Design, a division of Technical Innovation. The $2.2 million project provided both for concert-style playback and a production facility—crucial to a church that has a burgeoning media ministry. (Pastor Louie Giglio’s “How Great is Our God” has been viewed by three million people on YouTube.) Giglio and his wife Shelley also head up a small record label, sixstepsrecords—a partnership with Sparrow Records.
Inside Passion City Church, a central, 39ft. wide, 3×1 ratio projection system spans the stage. A highly functional, front-of-house position is home to the producer, two cameras, an audio mixer, and lighting control. A well-controlled tech core that houses all heat and noise producing gear is separate from any operations personnel. Key equipment includes two Barco FLM-HD20, two Barco FLM-HD14s, a Ross Video Vision production switcher, Hitachi HD cameras, Fujinon lenses, Renewed Vision ProPresenter graphics, Active Storage centralized storage, AJA Ki Pro HD recorders, and Apple Final Cut Pro. Since opening, the facility has become a regular tour stop for other churches as they search for the “right” way to achieve results.
Passion Conferences most recently hosted Passion 2012 in January. More than 44,000 university students from around the United States and from more than 30 other countries attended, and more than 170,000 people from more than 130 countries watched part of the conference online. As a collective whole, took a stand for freedom and raised more than $3 million dollars to help end human slavery.
