Associations Focus: ANSI Approves First InfoComm Performance Standard

Sep 2, 2009 11:30 AM

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the InfoComm International board of directors have released InfoComm’s first performance standard, ANSI/InfoComm 1M-2009, Audio Coverage Uniformity in Enclosed Listener Areas.

The delivery of consistent coverage in a listening area is important for supporting both speech reinforcement and program audio. A well-executed audio system design is one that allows all listeners to hear the system at approximately the same sound-pressure level throughout the desired frequency spectrum range, no matter where positioned in the designated listening area. The Audio Coverage Uniformity (ACU) performance standard provides a procedure to measure this spatial coverage and criteria for use in the design and commissioning of audio systems.

The procedures prescribed by this standard are intended to be used primarily for AV presentation systems containing audio within an enclosed environment. These systems may be installed within a variety of AV applications, including conference rooms, training rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, theaters, and museum exhibits. This standard may also be applied to large-venue audio systems or any system that includes audio coverage within enclosed spaces.

The Audio Coverage Uniformity performance standard is limited to uniformity measurements, and it specifically does not include testing or measurements for spectral response, time domain issues, or other parameters that may be required to assess the total performance of an audio system. Future standards may address other audio concerns.

“The ACU standard was developed by InfoComm’s Performance Standards Planning Committee and the Audio Coverage Uniformity Working Group to improve the listening experience in a wide variety of audio installations,” says InfoComm International Executive Director Randal A. Lemke, Ph.D. “Architects, facilities managers, owners, and technology managers will benefit from a test which verifies that their audio system meets one important criterion of quality.” The ACU standard was developed in an open process with consensus and transparency, in accordance with ANSI requirements.

“The entire audiovisual industry is indebted to Audio Coverage Uniformity Task Group Chair Fred Ampel of Technology Visions; our past Performance Standards Planning Committee Chair Scott Walker, CTS-D, LEED AP, of Waveguide Consulting; our current Performance Standards Committee Chair, Richard Derbyshire of Shen Milsom Wilke; and their team of volunteers who developed this important tool for AV consumers and technicians,” Lemke says.

New Online Courses Available

Three new online courses have been added to InfoComm’s robust training offerings: AV Math Online, Project Management for AV Online, and CTS Prep Virtual Classroom.

AV Math Online (GEN104) blends online lessons with short videos and provides a downloadable workbook to practice solving real-world AV math problems. Take advantage of online lessons that provide consistent and reliable training, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also includes section tests that can be sent to a supervisor to keep up with your progress. This course provides 15 renewal units.

Project Management for AV Online (GEN105) is a great core knowledge course for anyone who has just been promoted to project manager and for those who are already managing projects. It is a series of video training, taught by Brad Malone, PMP. An introductory video about the class is available on the course’s description page, found on InfoComm’s website.

CTS Prep Virtual Classroom (GEN113) uses an interactive approach to help you and/or your employees prepare for the InfoComm general Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) exam. It is much like a classroom course. There are lectures, assignments, conversations with other students, and readings. Instead of taking place in a building, however, the entire course takes place online. The content provides the same self-preparation opportunities available in a classroom, but the lectures are delivered as webinars and the discussions take place in an online forum. Designed for the mature learner who can work from a syllabus and is comfortable with online delivery, this class incurs no travel costs and time away from the job is minimized.

This course combines self-paced and instructor-led education using the Internet as a virtual classroom. Students are required to complete weekly assignments including reading books, viewing videos, and working with other students collaboratively using social networking tools. This course is offered for individuals preparing for the general CTS exam.
