In addition to the CEDIA Lead Renovator certification (detailed here), CEDIA offers its flagship Electronic Service Technician certifications in four levels and a Designer Certification. It’s easy to get started online to determine your course of certification. Go to www.cedia.net, click on Industry Professionals, and from the right nav bar, follow the CEDIA Certification link. CEDIA has organized the information in a very simple way—a four-step checklist to determine which type of certification is right for you and how to achieve it through a combination of pretest assessment, preparation study, and the exam.
The pretest assessment alone would be a worthwhile investment of 30 minutes and $35/$57 (members/nonmembers), just to get a fix on where you stand and how much investment it would take to earn certification. You may already have sufficient knowledge and experience to pass one of the exam levels without further study. If not, the pretest results are broken down in enough detail to highlight the specific areas of study you may need to pass a given level—that allows you to efficiently plan a course of exam prep study, not to mention giving you an idea of where you can build your skills.
On the in-person event front: If you’re new to the industry consider CEDIA’s Electronic Systems Technician Basic Residential Boot Camp—April 28-30 in Westbury, N.Y., and in Indianapolis May 17-19. (There will be sessions in July, October, and November, too.) Learn how to install low-voltage infrastructure for distributed audio and video in a three-day classroom/lab intensive that will start you on your way to certification.
