Axiom Audio Ep500

I like the fact that the EP500 system offers phase control of 0 or 180 degrees. It even has five crossover points of 40 Hz, 60 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, or bypass, if you're using the electronic crossover in your processor. It's nice that the EP500's trim knob provides the ability to overcome room loading or boundary effect. The subwoofer is also available in multiple finishes and grille colors.

My Pick: Axiom Audio EP500 powered subwoofer, $1,200 MSRP

What I Like About It: The first thing you notice about the Axiom Audio EP500 subwoofer is its quality construction. It’s an impressive subwoofer with a variety of quality terminations on the rear. It has both low level RCA and XLR balanced inputs, as well as speaker level inputs, if you need them.

I Would Change: It would be nice if the EP500’s crossover control was totally variable, rather than with preset positions.

Where I Used It: I used two Axiom Audio EP500 subwoofer units in a home theater setting in a Golden Eagle Log Home south of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.

My Results: In this home theater project, both EP500 subwoofers were located on the front wall. The system was a 7.1 loudspeaker system consisting of all Axiom Audio loudspeakers.

The room was 20 by 17 feet with a 9-foot ceiling. The walls were a combination of drywall on the top half and wainscoting on the lower half. The ceiling was textured drywall, and carpet was used for the floor covering.

The sound was extremely dynamic. The EP500 subwoofers gave chest thumping results on appropriate source material, but also maintained the detail and attack of the specific source.

The Axiom subwoofers balanced extremely well in the room and with the other loudspeakers. With music sources, they were refined and kept up with the source material, and never sounded boomy.
