CEA Standards Committees Finalizing New Car and Home Audio Measurements

The Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) Technology and Standards committees are revising and developing standards for home and car audio testing methods.

The Mobile Electronics Committee (R6) will be revising CEA-2006-A, Testing and Measurement Methods for Mobile Audio Amplifiers, to provide additional clarification of testing methods. This standard is the basis for CEA’s successful mobile amplifier power logo program used by many amplifier manufacturers to identify their products as industry standard compliant.

Additionally, the Audio Systems Committee (R3) is developing a standard to define test procedures for each of several common loudspeaker characteristics, such as frequency response and impedance, and requirements for reporting the test results. Both committees welcome additional participation.

“CEA’s Technology and Standards programs have a deep history of focusing on how to standardize the measurement of audio,” says Brian Markwalter, CEA vice president, Technology and Standards. “The results of these tests ensure that consumers can be confident in comparing audio equipment and making positive purchasing decisions.”

The Mobile Electronics Committee is co-chaired by Jim Tranchina, vice president of engineering, Audiovox Corp and Jack DeBiasio, OEM project manager, Scosche Industries Inc. The Audio Systems Committee is co-chaired by Ray Pace, senior design engineer, Audiovox Corp, and Walt Zerbe, product manager, audio/video, Russound.

Participation in CEA Standards activities is open to companies and organizations with direct and material interest. CEA membership is not required to participate.
