CEDIA: Consumers Demanding Home Networks, Security Systems

Results of a nationwide survey show consumers want professional help in installing custom electronic systems in their homes, confirming that home networking is a priority among many Americans, with home security systems topping the list of features in order of importance.

The RoperASW poll surveyed more than 1000 U.S. adults. Among survey respondents, 83% said that they would be interested in installing some type of custom electronic system in their homes, and 86% would seek the help of a qualified technician.

CEDIA released these results prior to the International Builders’ Show to demonstrate how this trend will affect the home building industry as more homeowners integrate such systems into their lives. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 34% of builders now offer structured wiring packages as standard or optional amenities.

“These results confirm what our member companies have been telling us: Home networking is becoming more important to the consumer as more homeowners recognize the safety, comfort, convenience and energy savings a networked home can bring,” said Billilynne Keller, CEDIA executive director. “[CEDIA’s] goal of educating and certifying custom electronic designers and installers is as important to our membership as it is to the consumer.”

RoperASW, an NOP World Company, has been conducting opinion polls for more than 75 years and remains one of the largest and most respected names in the survey research and consulting business.
