The Connected Buildings Conference will make its NSCA Expo 2007 debut in Orlando, Fla., on March 16 at the Orange County Convention Center. Serving as a forum for architects, designers, building owners, facility managers, and IT decision makers with an interest in learning more about technical services offered for today’s buildings, the conference will focus on how to best utilize technology to create “intelligent” buildings. Conference attendees will additionally discover how technology can generate additional revenue streams, improve health, safety, and security, enable workplace productivity, and reduce building lifecycle costs.

According to NSCA Executive Director Chuck Wilson, the idea behind the conference is simple. “We feel the next step in bridging the gap between technology providers and those who design and occupy buildings is to bring them together in one place,” he says. “By attending the Connected Buildings Conference, attendees will learn exactly how technology works and can benefit them personally.”

The Connected Buildings Conference is endorsed by Hanley Wood, and promoted by Bosch Security Systems, its Platinum Sponsor. Hanley Wood is a Washington, D.C.–based publisher of business-to-business housing and construction titles including the newly-launched magazines Architect and Architectural Lighting.

At the conference, Architect editor Ned Cramer will moderate a panel discussion of leading industry experts on technology. The discourse will center on the technology-enabled architect and delve into topics that will help shape the commercial construction industry as advanced technology becomes commonplace.

“Times have changed and so has the profession,” says Cramer of today’s architectural climate. “We’re entering a construction boom that will have a tremendous emphasis on technology. It’s time to get thinking about the best ways to specify and integrate those technologies from the outset of a project.”

Jeff Thorsteinson of the Technology Resources Company will also teach a course entitled “The Intelligent Building Lives,” which will take a comprehensive look at the types of technologies that are being applied to building management. Those signing up for the class will learn about building maintenance systems that facilitate the remote management and tracking of maintenance resources from afar, as well as equipment that reports on its own performance so that costs associated with its repair and replacement can be better anticipated. Further instruction will additionally reveal how Internet-based utilities can provide a variety of cost-effective services through the use of unified communications, data storage and protection, secure access and accountability, networked audio for communications, and digital signage to promote business.

As a complement to the day’s classroom opportunities, the conference will offer a tour of the NSCA Expo’s Intelligent Building Services Showcase. Within the showcase, attendees can participate in interactive applications that will demonstrate IP-enabled automation, monitoring and detection, converged communications, and how to build efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Attendees will also learn how to profit from a variety of IP-based products that can be positioned as services in a managed environment within a building or suite of buildings.

Other conference sessions offered will include AV Control Systems for Commercial Properties and CSI MasterFormat ’04: Organizing the Construction Information These sessions are accredited AIA and CES provider courses that will provide architects with learning units.

The Connected Buildings Conference offers one day of comprehensive education, a tour of the Intelligent Building Showcase, and an Expo floor filled with today’s most innovative companies working in the commercial electronic systems industry.
