Davis Islands Baptist Church Chooses Streambox Solution for Realtime

May 25, 2006 12:03 PM

Streambox, a leading supplier of realtime video solutions for broadcasting, satellite, and cable, announced that Tampa, Fla.-based Davis Islands Baptist Church (DIBC) has selected the
Streambox ACT L3 HD video transport system to support realtime HD broadcasts from a new facility, scheduled for completion this summer, to its existing building. The Streambox solution will allow DIBC to simulcast services at the new facility and incorporate HD video of the pastor’s sermons and messages into live services at the other location.

“Our goal is to give all of our church members the experience of a completely live service, and the Streambox system was the only product that offered an affordable means of providing the high-quality HD pictures we need for the 20ft. theater style, large-screen display we use on stage,” says Tyler Johnston, director of technical ministries at Davis Islands Baptist Church. “We didn’t think that an encoding solution would be able to offer quality nearing that of raw data, but the compression ratio of the Streambox encoder/decoder and its simplicity proved to be perfect for our needs. Now we can get a network that’s financially manageable and can guarantee the quality of our realtime HD worship broadcasts. The quality and significant cost savings this solution offers were major factors in our purchase decision.”

The Streambox ACT L3 STB3-9000 encoder/decoder system selected by DIBC is an integrated video-transport solution for realtime HDTV video and audio (HD-SDI, SMPTE-292M) delivery over TCP/IP networks. The system will enable the church to deliver 1080i or 720p HD video streams over a cost-effective network infrastructure. It features a complete range of video resolutions and bit-rate choices (1Mbps to 20 Mbps), combined with the industry’s most advanced compression technology, the ACT-L3 (Advanced Coding Technology-Level 3) codec, with proprietary transform coding, filtering, global multiframe motion estimation, context-based entropy coding, and advanced progressive and interlaced post-filtering.

Each encoder and decoder is equipped with dual-gigabit Ethernet network ports for multiplexing/demultiplexing of a video stream, taking advantage of lower-bit rate, lower-cost networks by splitting the video stream over DIBC’s leased multichannel IP network. Advanced FEC (forward error correction) allows the system to recover from multiple lost packets, and additional burst error protection is provided to compensate for sustained data loss. Together, these Streambox technologies will provide DIBC with a seamless video delivery solution that meets the church’s technical and budgetary requirements.
