The First-Ever Installer Olympics

The recently initiated CEDIA Olympics committee will organize live competition during CEDIA Expo to test skills and endurance among member installers.

The competition will consist of a variety of tests including:

The DSS Bull’s Eye

In this event, installers will have only a compass, a level and a time limit. Once each contestant is satisfied with their shot, the receiver will be turned on. The person with the strongest level on the meter wins.

Video Calibration Shootout

A high-definition TV will be set up out of calibration. All factory settings will be set out of convergence. The contestants will have a set period of time to re-calibrate the TV and set the video to ISF standards. A panel of experts will judge the accuracy of the “dial-in.” The winner gets the TV.

The Amp Toss

One big amplifier, one long distance, one big winner.

Gone Fishin’

Fishing wire is an art. Getting a wire to a location in a wall with an unknown structure inside can be difficult — and at Expo it will be uniquely difficult. Contestants will have several fishing tasks that must be accomplished. These tasks will address the common hazard involved in installers’ everyday work of getting wires where they need to be. The team or individual with the fastest time wins.

The Van Load

Participants will be challenged to load as many boxes as they can into a van. The team who loads the most boxes wins.

In addition to the competitions listed above, The CEDIA Olympic Committee has considered additional ideas for showcasing installers’ technical and athletic abilities. There may be lots of surprises at Expo this year.
