What I Like About It: The Innovox LA1425 is affordable, easy to install, and provides true line-array performance in a low-profile package. Because the loudspeaker is a passive device, it doesn’t require multiple power amplifiers or processors for each transducer. I like the ribbon tweeter design, because it provides very even, natural sound reproduction.
The small size of the loudspeaker allows it to be installed unobtrusively, which is a big deal, especially in churches.
We have done A/B tests with this loudspeaker and some other, much more expensive line-array products on the market. This Innovox model stands up well in a speech-only setting. It doesn’t have the long-throw performance of some other solutions, but if we need extra projection, we just add more LA1425s as delays.
I Would Change: The Ribbon Driver on one of the speakers fell off during shipping. It was easily fixed, but perhaps Innovox could find a better way to secure this.
Where I Used It: St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Maryville, Tenn.
My Results: For many years, NBS has specialized in designing AV systems for historically significant buildings. A group from St. Andrews Episcopal Church visited Old St. Andrews Episcopal Church here in Charleston, which is the oldest church in the South and where we had designed and installed a pew-back system in partnership with Glenn Keyes Architects. The church members were impressed with the sound quality, but especially with the seamless integration of high-tech components into an historic architecture. St. Andrews officials then asked NBS to design a similar solution for their historic church.
The room seated approximately 300 and was very “live.” The church didn’t have the budget to do a pew-back system, and conventional, two-way loudspeakers wouldn’t work. The church needed an affordable, simple design. To keep costs down, Don Myers, a local contractor affiliated with the church, and other members installed the hardware.
The LA1425 was a perfect solution. With just two of these and only a powered mixer (no DSP), we were able to provide excellent sound coverage and quality for speech throughout the seating area, with plenty of gain before feedback, and stay within the church’s budget. This is truly amazing considering that the only logical place to mount the speakers was directly behind the pulpit and lectern microphone positions.
If you’re looking for a quick, easy, affordable solution in acoustically live spaces where aesthetics is a priority, this is the loudspeaker for you.
