In London’s St. Pancras International Eurostar train station, AV integrator Sysco partnered with content developer Land Design to integrate what it calls a Google Wall in the station’s departure lounge. The Wall is based on Google Earth technology and allows travelers to view 3D renditions of routes and destinations using 24-inch Winmate LCD touch screens. Software communicates with Google, enabling users to search for a particular destination and zoom in for a bird’s-eye view of train routes and 3D views of European city centers.

Images appear on four 84-inch bezel-less plasma screens, as well as 32-inch NEC 3210 LCD displays driven by custom PCs that use Gefen Extender technology for fiber-optic networks. Analog Way’s Quattro D scaler/switcher provides display splits, scaling, and geometry corrections for the screens, which each run a different resolution. Cue Show Control manages the PCs through a rack-room touch panel that permits a technician or client to assess the system. The PCs run self-diagnostics each morning, notifying the integrator’s engineers of their status.

“The greatest challenge was achieving the total integration of these complex systems and their infrastructure into the new terminal building,” says Hugo Roche, president of Sysco. “A lot of care had to go into integrating screens, cabling, and other technical infrastructure into the fabric of the building.”
