FLAT-PANEL MAY SEEM COMMODITIZED these days, but manufacturers continue to look for ways to improve their products. One way is to boost motion performance with 120 Hz processing technology, which effectively doubles the rate at which a moving image is refreshed on-screen. Researchers at Austin, Texas–based DisplaySearch estimate that shipments of 120 Hz LCD TVs are set to explode worldwide, especially 1080p versions, though North America will be slower to adopt and lean primarily toward bigger panels (46 inches and up).

“100/120 Hz is a feature strongly reliant on good consumer education and product demonstration. [It] is a critical factor for success,” said Paul Gray, director of TV analysis at DisplaySearch.
