Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in the Americas— including LCD and plasma technologies — grew to 6.2 million units in 2005, up from 3.4 million in 2004. Their Americas Consumer Flat Panel Display Census also shows that growth has slowed; unit sales grew 162% from 2003 to 2004.

“The largest growth occurred among the HDTV models,” according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. “In 2004, the Wide XGA models only accounted for about 365,000 units in the Americas. Last year, this segment soared to almost 2.3 million units, more than a six-fold change. The second most popular resolution was 720p, nearly doubling from 649,000 units in 2004 to 1.2 million units in 2005.”

Larger screen sizes were also more popular. The 30 to 35 inch size was the top seller in 2005, growing from 263,000 units in 2004 to 1.4 million units. The 40 to 45 inch segment was second, growing from 497,000 units in 2004 to 1.2 million in 2005.

Sharp was the top-selling brand on a unit basis in the Americas for 2005 with a 19.0% share. Sony was in second place with 15.8%, and Panasonic was third with 13.7%.
