Peer Reviewer:Robert Aguirre, senior account executive, CTS, SPL Integrated Solutions, Norcross, Ga. The company provides four services: collaborative communication systems, managed conferencing services, large-scale audio and video performance solutions, and IP integration services.

My Pick: Revolabs Solo Executive Wireless Microphone System

List Price: Eight-channel system: $5,995; four-channel system: $3,195

What I Like About It: The Revolabs Solo wireless microphone offers excellent vocal intelligibility, eight hours of talk time, and considerably more freedom of movement than conventional wireless microphones, because there is no body-pack transmitter. The system provides 128-bit encryption for secure conversations, and there is single-touch mute capability to ensure privacy. The Solo also gives maximum range notification alerts, which reminds people if they step out of range or to return the microphone at the meeting’s conclusion. Further, the system’s range is controllable, which can be very useful to avoid interfering with equipment in adjacent rooms.

I Would Change: The system is restricted to 16 simultaneous, wearable mics. This limits the ability to expand with larger groups, though additional tabletop mics can be substituted for the wearable units.

Where I Used It: We used this product at the Sprint Executive Briefing Center in Atlanta. This is a corporate presentation space where company officials brief others on new programs, products, and services. The space has facilities for audio and video.

My Results: For the Sprint Executive Briefing Center, we liked the idea of wireless microphone systems, but in too many cases, the body-pack transmitters are uncomfortable and burdensome. For this reason, we turned to the Revolabs wireless microphones as they are small, light, and can be attached easily to a collar or lapel. Since the system’s base station serves as the transmitter, users are not restricted by uncomfortable body-packs.

The Revolabs Solo microphones are designed for relatively close proximity use and, as such, they do not induce peripheral noise into the audio path. This design keeps the audio clean and highly intelligible without picking up all the paper shuffling, footsteps, and related noises that other systems commonly do.

Another very important aspect of the Solo system is that the mics always charge when resting in their base station. For those responsible for setting up a meeting room, the liability of ensuring properly charged wireless mics is critical. The Revolabs design effectively eliminates this issue.
