Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara, California, installed a new Nexo system that is being billed as “the best club sound system between San Francisco and Los Angeles.” The Velvet Jones venue is about an hour and a half from downtown L.A. and combines DJ dance music and live bands three nights a week. The variety of music at Velvet Jones requried interesting acoustic solutions. Kurt Metzler, audio system designer, explains, “The building is a long brick wall box, with the stage at one end, the dance area in front of the stage, followed by a large bar and then about 20 feet of entrance area. There is a hotel directly behind the club, as well as businesses on each side sharing walls. There are skylights above the dance floor area and a roll-up back door. First priority before bying any new sound equipmetnwas to cut the leakage to a minimum…or else there would be no club.” The design called for lots of soundboard, silicone caulking and absorptive material. After those things were set, a pair of Nexo Alpha EMs and B118s were flown in front of the stage, supported by two proprietary dual 18s built into the bottom of the stage, and six Nexo PS10s: four on the floor and two in yhokes on light bars facing the rear of the stage in stereo. Partner and general manager Craig Jenkins calls the setup “the closest thing to CD-quality sound that a band is going to receive without going into the studio.”
