As many as 49 million customer records stolen from Dell, up for sale on the dark web

Dell says that stolen records do not include payment information, but names and addresses have been compromised

If you’re the owner of any Dell products, you may want to investigate if your data may have been stolen. The tech giant recently confirmed that it had a security breach that resulted in customer’s names, physical addresses, and order information being pirated. The perpetrators have claimed that 49 million records were stolen, and are now up for sale on the internet’s black market. The affected records are reportedly from purchases made from 2017 to 2024.

In a statement to The Register, a Dell spokesperson commented:

“We recently identified an incident involving a Dell portal with access to a database containing limited types of customer information including name, physical address and certain Dell hardware and order information. It did not include financial or payment information, email address, telephone number or any highly sensitive customer data.”

According to The Register, the following categories are labeled on the illegal forum where the stolen data is purportedly for sale: service tag, items, date, country, warranty, organization name, address, city, province, postal code, customer code, and order number.

Dell has since emailed customers with the following message:

“Dell Technologies takes the privacy and confidentiality of your information seriously. We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell.

We believe there is not a significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved.”
