Acoustically transparent LED cinema projection screen has hidden speakers

An acoustic cavity behind the screen has been optimized for immersive audio

Last month Xinjiekou International Cinema in Nanjing Deji Plaza, China, launched what they are calling the world’s first acoustic transparent Cinema LED screen. Developed by Unilumin, the new cinema display has replaced what was previously a traditional IMAX screen.

Measuring 20.48 meters (67 feet) wide by 10.8 meters (35 feet) high and supporting 4K96 high frame rate with a peak brightness of 300 nits, Unilumin claims that the new screen is the first of its kind to receive DCI certification. A unique feature of the LED film projection system is the acoustic cavity that lies behind the screen, which contains its primary sound channel speakers. The cavity itself has been optimized to provide an immersive resonance within the theater.

In addition to its novel approach to acoustics, the Unilumin LED film projection system doesn’t need a dedicated projection room, allowing theaters to utilize that space however they see fit. The company’s catalog includes LED screens from 5 meters (16.4 feet) up to 20 meters (65.62 feet).

Outside of Nanjing, Unilumin has created successful projects at the Regency Theater in Los Angeles and San Ya cinema in China’s Hainan province.
