Activists hack digital menu boards of nearly 300 fast food restaurants

Mary Brown's locations fell victim to pro-Palestine hackers

Customers at all Mary Brown’s fried chicken locations were surprised last week to find that all menu boards were altered to display messages related to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Nearly 300 restaurants fell victim to the hack, affecting every menu board inside the restaurant, as well as drive through screens outside. Mary Brown’s acknowleged the issue, posting to social media that they were working to resolve the problem.

The hackers, who credited themselves as NexusQassamy, appear to have been able to infiltrate a third-party digital signage provider. The incident was first reported by Dave Haynes of Sixteen:Nine, who wrote:

“The hackers were sufficiently comfy that they showed their name and Telegram handle on the screen.Apart from the embarrassment, the more fundamental issue is disruption and lost business when screens had to go black while a fix was made.”

Thankfully, the issue has since been resolved.
