Amazon debuts new smart displays

The new Echo Show displays feature improved audio and a slimmed-down design

At its Fall hardware event earlier this week, Amazon announced a brand new lineup of its Echo smart home products, including two next-gen Echo Show smart displays. The Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 are both built on the company’s new AZ3 Pro chip, and are designed with a slimmed-down profile.

The Echo Show 8’s 8-inch LCD display features a resolution of 720p, while the Echo Show 11’s larger display boasts a Full HD resolution. According to Amazon, both new displays utilize “negative liquid crystal design” in order to require fewer layers of lamination, resulting in a greater viewing angle. Both the Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 feature a 13-megapixel camera that allows the displays to greet users when they approach.

Audio has also been upgraded for both new displays, with front-facing stereo speakers and a custom woofer that Amazon claims deliver spatial audio. Full-range drivers are placed under the floating displays, designed to fire audio towards the listener. Amazon’s new AZ3 Pro chip builds on the AZ3’s improved audio capabilities, while also outfitting the displays with new language models.

The Echo Show 8 is currently available for preorder for $179.99, while the Echo Show 11 is available for preorder for $219.99. Both devices are currently scheduled for a November 12 launch.
