Among the mountains of information Apple has already released during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this week is the announcement that Airplay will receive support spatial audio with Dolby Atmos. Thus far, Apple has only named HomePod, as well as “compatible third-party equipment” as being able to take advantage of the upgrade.
“AirPlay adds Spatial Audio so users can get an immersive audio experience, including support for Dolby Atmos, when using AirPlay to stream audio from iPhone and iPad to HomePod and compatible third-party audio equipment,” reads Apple’s announcement.

AirPlay is Apple’s wireless casting platform that allows users to stream content from their personal devices to external media players. While some devices, such as the HomePod, natively support Dolby Atmos, it is limited to when the device has a direct connection to the media it is playing, meaning utilizing AirPlay will result in a downgrade in the audio experience. This new upgrade will remedy that, meaning users can enjoy lossless, immersive audio even when streaming wirelessly.
